The World Cheese Awards 2024-25, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, took place in November in Viseu, Portugal.
A truly global cheese event, the 36th edition of the Awards brought together cheesemakers, retailers, buyers and food commentators worldwide to judge over 4,000 cheeses from over 40 countries.
This year Lanzarote cheeses have won a total of 11 medals ( 1 medal less than last year) produced by the same 3 “Queserías” or cheesemakers than on the previous edition, broken down as follows: 1 gold, 5 silver and 5 bronze.
This is the list of the island winners ordered alfabetically by “Quesería”:
FINCA DE UGA:

Silver medal for Queso Alegranza
It’s a mature cheese produced with goat milk. It has fruity aromas of dried fruits, slight acidity and a bit of saltiness.
Silver medal for their Bodega de Oveja
It’s a matured cheese produced with sheep milk. It has aromas of dried fruits such as roasted almonds, slight acidity and little spiciness.
Silver medal for Don Nicolás
It’s a matured cheese produced with cow milk. It has slightly lactic aromas, sweet touches, caramel, toasted and a bit fruity.
Silver medal for Vulcano
It’s a semicured cheese produced with a mix of cow, goat and sheep milk. It has a lactic flavour, with hints of dried fruits and a slight acidity.
Bronze medal for their Bodega Cabra y Oveja
It’s a matured cheese produced with goat and sheep milk. It has a fruity taste with aromas of dried fruits, with a slight acidity and a little spicy.
Bronze medal for Rojillo
It’s a semicured cheese produced with goat milk. It has lactic aromas of dried fruits, with a slight acidity and spiciness.

Gold medal for Queso de Cabra Tierno Ahumado
It’s a soft cheese produced with goat milk. It has an aroma of wood shavings with a lactic flavour, very soluble in the mouth, with toasted touches and a cocoa aftertaste.
Bronze medal for Queso de Cabra Curado Pimentón
It’s a cured cheese produced with goat milk. It has floral / tropical aromas with lactic nuances and its flavour has a hint of dried fruits.
Bronze medal for Queso Semicurado Gofio
It’s a semicured cheese produced with goat milk covered in gofio, the Canarian flour. You can read more about this staple of the Canarian gastronomy here:https://lanzaroteinformation.co.uk/gofio/. It has fruity and yoghurt aromas with touches of cream.

We couldn’t find any notes for the Guatisea cheeses so if any of you have tried it, we would love to hear what you think of them.
Most of the above have already been awarded medals in the past, but there are a couple of new entries this year.
