This year’s edition of the World Cheese Awards, organised by the Guild of Fine Food, took place in the city of  Bergen in Norway at the beginning of November.

A record-breaking amount of nearly 3,500 cheeses took part on this internationally renowned competition with 230 judges representing 29 different nations that choose the winners in a blind tasting system.
A total of 38 Canarian cheeses were awarded medals: 15 from Gran Canaria, 11 from Fuerteventura, 9 from Lanzarote -6 more than last year!-, 2 from Tenerife and 1 from El Hierro.

Lanzarote cheeses have won 1 super gold medal, 4 silver medals and 4 bronze medals.

This is the list of Lanzarote winners by “Quesería” or cheesemongers:
Finca de Uga
Super Gold medal: Bodega de oveja. It’s a cured cheese produced from goat milk and matured from 5 to 10 months.
It’s  texture it’s closed, slightly unctuous, with crystals. Medium humidity.
It has nutty aromas like toasted almonds. Slight acidity. Not very spicy. Medium persistence.

Silver medal: Alegranza. Another cured one produced from goat milk and matured from 5 to 12 months.

Its texture is closed, compact, granulated, with crystals. Low humidity.
It has fruity aromas, nuts. Slight acidity. Somehow salty. Medium persistence.
Silver medal: Untado en pimentón.  Cured, and with paprika, produced from goat milk and mature from 5 to 12 months.
Its texture is compact, granulated, with crystals. Low humidity.
It has fruity aromas, nuts. Slight acidity and spicy. High persistence.

Bronze medal: Bodega. It’s semi-cured to cured style, produced from goat and sheep milk and matured from 5 to 10 months.

Its texture is closed  with crystals. Medium humidity.
It has a fruity taste with a nutty aroma. Slight acidity. A little bit spicy. High persistence.

These four cheeses are best served at 20ºC at which their flavour and aroma are at their most intense.

Quesería El Faro

Silver medal: Queso de cabra semicurado natural.  Semi cured, produced from goat milk  and matured from 20 to 45 days.
It has an elastic and creamy texture. It has fruity and yogurt aromas. It melts in your mouth and it has cream notes.

Bronze medal : Queso de cabra curado untado en pimentón.  Cured, and produced from goat milk  and matured from 45 to 100 days.
Its texture is compact and unctuous. It has floral/tropical aromas with lactic touches.

Bronze medal : Queso de cabra curado natural.
  It’s a cured cheese produced from goat milk  and matured from 20 to 45 days.
It has an elastic and creamy texture. It has fruity and yogurt aromas. It melts in your mouth and it has cream notes.

Bronze medal: Guatisea semicurado

For these last two we don’t have the tasting notes so if any of you have tried it, we would love to hear what you think of them.

Although we haven’t managed to get our hands on the list of exhibitors of the upcoming Festival Enogastronómico Saborea Lanzarote , the Food & Wine Festival  in Teguise, we are positive that most of them, if not all of them, will be there so you will have a chance to try these and other Lanzarote cheeses.

Also, during the Food & Wine Festival, there is a dedicated space at the Casa-Museo del Timple for Canarian produce called “Casa del Producto Canario” that covers 3 areas: food, cheese and wine.

At 12h “Vacas de Oro”  –  tasting of some of the cow milk winning cheeses
At 13h“Cabras de Oro”  – tasting of some of the goat milk winning cheeses
At 17h “Ovejas de Oro” – tasting  of some of the sheep milk winning cheeses
At 18h “Mezclas de Oro” – tasting of some mixed milk winning cheeses
