10,000 Demonstrate “The Canaries Have a Limit”
Around 10,000 people joined the protest march in Arrecife at the weekend, with a similar, much smaller protest on La Graciosa. The protests were peaceful and many of the placards cited Cesar Manrique, echoing his words at similar protests in the 1990’s. The protestors are asking for a cohesive tourism plan for the islands, which will reduce overall numbers, and at the same time, the creation of a decent infrastructure for the growing population.
President: “Things Have To Change”
President of the Canaries Government Fernando Clavijo, responded to the protests to say: “Things have to change, because we cannot remain the same and we have to review and reset.”
He went on: “I confirm what I said before the demonstration, that this is an opportunity to carry out serious, rigorous, scientific work and listening to the experts to be able to face the modifications that we have to make in the short term, n the medium and long term”.
Man “Critical” After Falling Into Swimming Pool
A 53 year old suffered a cardiac arrest after falling in a swimming pool at a Puerto del Carmen complex. He was pulled from the water by a lifeguard who carried out resuscitation until an ambulance crew arrived. They stabilised him and took him to Arrecife hospital where he remains in critical condition.
New Wine Launched
In collaboration with Salinas de Janubio, the salt pans, Bodegas La Geria has launched a new wine, a dry white, made with Lanzarote’s characteristic Malvasía Volcanica grape. The wine, called Real Puerto Janubio, reflects that Janubio, before the eruptions at Timanfaya, was a busy commercial port. The label shows a map of Lanzarote from 1751.
Extensive Water Cuts. Again.
There were water cuts in four municipalities of the island on Wednesday, with no mains water in many parts of Haria, Tias, Tinajo and Teguise.
Eco tax Rejected By Canarian Parliament
The Canarian Parliament has rejected the suggestion of an eco or tourist tax, which has been put forward by a number of smaller parties, during a plenary meeting this week. One proposal that has been accepted for further discussion is one that will charge tourists to visit protected areas of the island.
Bus Strike Averted
A strike by bus drivers planned for early May, has been called off after an agreement was reached which will allow drivers to take a planned 30 minute break each day, and to have at least one weekend off per month.
Promises On Roads
Public works minister Jacobo Medina said this week that the plans to create a by pass, which will allow drivers to connect directly to the main road south from the Arrecife ring road are going very well. He also mentioned that a new file will be started to look at making the main road to Playa Blanca into a dual carriageway.
