UD Lanzarote (Unión Deportiva,) is the island’s professional football team. The team’s nickname is Los Rojillos – The Reds – and they play at home at the sports stadium in Arrecife, on FIFA approved artificial grass.

The games are great fun, with a tremendous atmosphere, lots of drums, and food and drinks bars.

UD Lanzarote was created in 1970 and plays in the Spanish 3rd Division finishing fifth last season.

Their finest moment was hosting the mighty Real Madrid in a round of the Copa del Rey in 2001. Despite fielding several of “Los Galacticos,” including Zidane, Figo and Steve McMananan, Lanzarote held Madrid to 1-1 at half time, with the UD Lanzarote goal scored by part time waiter Oscar Vladamir. Real Madrid eventually won the game 3-1.

You can buy team kit from our friend Ian, who has stalls at Puerto del Carmen and Teguise markets selling the official home and away kit.
