The Latest From Living With Parkinson’s

You might remember the Lanzarote Information team walked the length of the island a couple of years ago, and helped raise money for the local charity Living with Parkinson’s.

The charity is still offering fantastic support to people suffering with the disease and their latest money raising venture is for a group of ladies to complete the famous Camino de Santiago pilgrimage.

Here’s what they told us:

A group of 6 Lanzarote ladies are walking 132km of the Camino de Santiago on 14-21 March as a fund-raiser. It’s happening at the end of international Women’s week, so a real GIRL POWER event !!

Plus.. We have discovered a device called a BeechBand which looks like a Smart Watch ….It emits a small pulse which, for most wearers, calms many of the symptoms of Parkinson’s. It’s not immediate, it’s not guaranteed to work for all and it is not intended to be replacing prescribed meds. But for many it is offering a better quality of day to day life, We purchased some of the bands from LWP donations and three of our Members have participated in a 6 week trial so far – if the device helps, they get to keep them at the end of the trial period. So far, 100% success, with improvement in tremors, clearer speech, less anxiety, better sleep, improved balance, to name only a few of the wins. It would be so exciting to be able to offer these devices to all our members … a positive use of the donations we are receiving. But we’d like to buy more, hence the fund raiser.

What an adventure and a pretty hardcore walk too. We spent a couple of days in Santiago de Compostela and it was really emotional watching the pilgrims arrive at the end of their personal journeys. We took the shot above after one group arrived.

Can you help with a donation to the charity, to encourage the ladies, but also to help Parkinson’s sufferers here on the island?

Here’s where to make a donation: Just Giving.
