On Tuesday, 28 October, HiperDino celebrated its 40th anniversary, so we say Happy Birthday HiperDino!
The company is looking back not only on its past four decades, but also towards the future, medium and long term, for which it plans to develop a powerful and solid expansion plan that will consolidate the 100% Canarian supermarket chain as one of the most competitive in the food sector in the archipelago.
During 2025 alone HiperDino has opened 28 new stores and carried out 9 renovations, with an investment of approximately €45 million compared to the €32 million invested in 2024. The commitment to continue improving and offering quality customer service will lead the supermarket chain to open 30 new stores from 2026 onwards.
As a result of this expansion plan, the business group continues to lead job creation in the archipelago with 9,963 employees as of October this year, making it the leading company in terms of direct job creation on the islands and one of the most powerful in terms of induced and indirect job creation in sectors such as logistics, industry and energy. For example, in 2024, HiperDino generated 37,443 indirect jobs, representing an economic contribution of €1.271 billion. The knock-on effect of job creation has therefore meant that for every job created directly by HiperDino, 3.67 full-time jobs have been created in the rest of the Canary Islands economy, in the sectors mentioned above.
Another notable factor in HiperDino’s value chain is its commitment to local products. HiperDino invests around €676 million a year in local production, with 64% of its purchases from the primary sector coming from local suppliers. A family business that contributes 2.72% to the Canary Islands’ Gross Domestic Product, according to data from 2024, making it the leading Canary Islands company in terms of job creation and the third in terms of turnover. This makes it one of the leading food distribution chains nationwide, ranking eleventh in terms of turnover. Quite impressive, isn’t it?
The origins of HiperDino date back to 1972, when José Abraham and Andrés Domínguez opened the first supermarket under the name ‘Hermanos Domínguez’. With purely Canarian capital, twelve years later, in 1985, the first store under the name HiperDino was opened in the Miller Bajo neighbourhood of the capital of Gran Canaria. Since then, with Javier Puga as CEO, it has established itself as the leading food chain in the archipelago, creating nearly 10,000 direct jobs and with 289 stores in the region and the Balearic Islands.
“Our policy of prices adjusted to the economy of Canarian households has always marked and defined our brand. What we started as a family project has grown to become the leading supermarket chain for the islanders, and for us this not only fills us with pride and gratitude, but also motivates us to continue supporting our own, our local products, our suppliers, our customers, our staff and our stores. Each and every one of them is key to our value chain, which ultimately makes up HiperDino,” say José Abraham and Andrés Domínguez.
For the president and vice-president of HiperDino, “an example of our commitment to Canarian society is that we maintain an expansion plan based on the real demand of our customers. We are what we are and we have the potential we have thanks to the trust placed in us over all these years by our customers, who are ultimately the heart that drives HiperDino and are part of our big family. All of this has led us, over four decades, to repay that trust with stores that inspire pride and with a service built on closeness and affection,” they add.
