ARAHAL- Un lugar donde descansar (Cía. Pieles)
The company Pieles premieres its new show as part of the #EnParalelo Festival at the 42nd FIMC. An interdisciplinary proposal that inhabits tradition. Percussion, voice, stone, seed… and silences that merge into an ancestral song connecting the Canary Islands, North Africa and the Sephardic legacy, with which Pieles opens a door to the intimate, the sacred and the collective.
With Arahal, the Pieles company opens a door to the intimate, the sacred and the collective. It is not just a new show: it is a theatrical refuge, a symbolic space where pause takes on meaning. Arahal —a word with ancient resonance— evokes a place to rest, but also to remember, breathe and experience the essential. Where the body settles, memory is activated and sound becomes a vehicle for deep connection.
This new interdisciplinary show consolidates and expands the language that Pieles has forged over more than a decade: a performing art that does not illustrate tradition, but embodies it, re-signifies it and projects it. In Arahal, this gesture is intensified by incorporating new sounds that traverse the Canarian identity from its mestizo roots. The Amazigh traces of North Africa and the melodic sensibility of the Sephardic legacy beat in the new compositions, expanding the poetic and cultural scope of the work.
The melismas inherited from Sephardic songs dialogue with the organic rhythms of the Atlas Mountains — dry, cyclical, almost telluric — creating a lively polyphony that links territories, times and bodies. This heritage is not presented as a folkloric reference, but as living matter: a contemporary sound fabric that breathes through voices, skins, stones, gestures and silence.
The Arahal scene unfolds like a ceremony. A ritual where percussion — skin, wood, bone, seed — is transformed into prayer, where the voice weaves invisible bridges and movement evokes the ancestral without words. There is no linear narrative, but everything counts: the sweat of labour, the sigh of mourning, the vibration of celebration, the breath of origin.
Arahal does not represent tradition: it inhabits it. It delves into the rural imagination of the Canary Islands with respect and depth, intertwining it with the shared memories of the southern Mediterranean and the Maghreb. There is no nostalgia or exotic recreation in this work, but rather a sincere search for meaning, an act of presence and belonging.
The premiere of Arahal is, therefore, a borderline song, a scenic offering, a gesture of poetic resistance in the face of the vertigo of the immediate. A place where resting is not stopping, but finding oneself: with the earth, with others, with oneself, with what remains. An invitation to inhabit time with awareness, to listen to what still whispers beneath our feet, to allow ourselves to be touched by the essential.
And it is there, on that threshold between the intimate and the collective, between the insular and the universal, where the Pieles Company once again awaits us.
