Politicians Fight Fire
Two of Lanzarote’s best known politicians – Yonathan de León, Mayor of Arrecife, and Jacobo Medina, Councillor for Public Works, reacted when they were both close to an unoccupied house in Playa Honda that caught fire. Both attacked the flames with fire extinguishers and kept the fire at bay until the fire department arrived. Nobody was hurt.
Balearía Announce Easy Pass For Fuerteventura Ferry
Balearía, who recently took control of the Armas ferry service on the islands, has announced a new service on the Lanzarote – Fuerteventura route. Easy Pass allows people to board the ferry without a prior booking and payment will be taken via a phone app when the Easy Pass QR code is swiped on boarding.
New Water Consortium Puts Plan In place For Water Cuts
The new water consortium has created a website that shows in advance where water cuts will be taking place on the island. The recent hot weather means that reservoirs have run dangerously low again. The cuts generally affect towns and villages for 24 hours, once per week. As before, they do not affect tourist resort areas or Arrecife.
Tropical Nights
Tropical nights, where the temperarture doesn’t fall below 20 degrees throughout the night, have been recorded across the island this week.
Lanzarote Tops 170,000 Residents
Lanzarote’s population surpassed 170,000 as of 1st July, an increase of 2,786 over the last 12 months. Overall, the Spanish population has increased 104,000 to 49,801,559.
Grape Harvest May Reach 2.5 Million Kilos
The grape harvest is about half way to completion and the prediction is that it will be a good one, at over 2.5 Million Kilos, compared to just 700,000 last year.
Injured Kitesurfer Air Lifted To Hospital
A 17 year old kitesurfer was seriously injured in an accident at Famara on Tuesday afternoon. He was stabilised by an ambulance team, then transferred to Molina Orosa Hospital in Arrecife by helicopter. Other people on the beach said he fell from height and injured his neck.
Regularised Immigrants – Canaries Have Highest Social Affiliations
A total of 37,525 people applied to have their immigration status regularised on the islands, and across Spain the total number was 262,475. The Canaries have the highest number (30,2%) across Spain already co-opted into the social security system and ready to start contributing. So far affiliations have been General (81.5%,) agricultural workers (8.3%,) domestic workers (5.4%,) self employed (4.8%,) and maritime workers (0.5%)
Heatwave Set To Continue
The heatwave brought temperatures of over 38 degrees to the island on Sunday, and it is expected to continue for most of this week. The high in The Canaries was recorded in Gran Canaria at 45 degrees over the weekend.
Road Resurfacing In Los Cocoteros
The roads in the village of Los Cocoteros are being resurfaced in a 1.2 million Euro project being funded by Teguise Ayuntamiento. The works will include new pavements, street furniture and signage.
