Rules For E Scooters From January
A new set of rules of E Scooters has been announced by the DGT. Effective 2nd January, riders will have to wear helmets, scooters must be limited to 25KMH, only one rider per scooter is permitted, and they must have civil liability insurance. Additionally fines have been announced for riding wearing headphones or while using a mobile phone.
October Cruise Passengers Up 14.7%
Just over 40,000 cruise ship passengers arrived in Lanzarote in October, up 14.7% on October last year.
600,000 Bottles Of Wine Expected
This year’s poor grape harvest of 842,000 kilos means the island will only produce about 600,000 bottles of wine this year, well below the usual more than a million bottles. Around 50% of them will be consumed on the island, with 42% going to other islands, where Lanzarote wine is prized, leaving 5% for export to mainland Spain and 3% abroad.
First Passengers Leave Lanzarote On MSC Cruise Ship
MSC Musica departed Lanzarote this week, for the first time with passengers who had embarked from Lanzarote. Prior to the opening earlier this year of the cruise ship terminal, with immigration and luggage handling facilities, it was not possible to embark or disembark from ships on the island.
No Trace Of Phylloxera In Lanzarote
The Minister of Agriculture of the Government of the Canary Islands, Narvay Quintero, confirmed this week that not a single case of phylloxera has been detected either in Lanzarote or in Gran Canaria and the outbreaks of Tenerife have already been eliminated. This is exceptional news for the wine making industry as the disease can kill off vines very quickly.
Puerto Calero Road To Be Re-Asphalted
The road between Puerto del Carmen and Puerto Calero, the LZ506 will be closed for three weeks from 19th November, while the road is resurfaced.
Plan To Refurbish Promenade In Playa Blanca
The Mayor of Yaiza, Óscar Noda, presented a plan this week for a full refurbishment of the promenade in Playa Blanca, which will include resurfacing and the installation of new water and sewage pipes, and a new pumping station. The plan will cost 5 million € and it is hoped work will start in 2026, being done in sections, with the co-operation of local businesses.
Buggy Company Fined
A buggy company on the island has been fined 4,500 € for taking a group to the protected area of Los Ajaches in July of this year. Minister of the Environment, Samuel Martín, emphasizes that “the circulation of quads, 4×4 or buggies without authorization not only erodes agricultural roads, it poses a real risk to biodiversity and affects especially fragile species. The hubara, for example, can leave breeding areas in the presence of continuous noise and traffic, compromising its survival.”
Low Cloud Causes Airport Diversions
Low cloud at the airport on Sunday caused several flights to be diverted to other islands, with pilots unable to carry out a visual approach. Among the affected flights were an EasyJet from Newcastle, a Jet2.com from Birmingham, a TUI from London and a Canaryfly flying from Gran Canaria.
Cabildo Applies To Costas For Return Of Horses
The horse sculptures created by artist Jason deCaires Taylor and which were originally placed at Castillo San José in Arrecife are currently being stored in a ship, after the previous government ordered their removal. The current government has confirmed they are actively seeking permission from the department of coasts, to put them back in to the water near Playa del Reducto.
