April 24th 2019 would have been César Manrique’s 100th birthday. A special event on that day will mark the start of a full year of celebration of his life and works – Manrique 100.
The event will take place at noon at the auditorium of Jameos del Agua, one of his most famous works, and will be attended by Pedro San Gines, President of Lanzarote’s Cabildo, Fernando Clavijo, President of The Canary Island’s government. An invitation has also been issued to The President of Spain, Pedro Sanchez. It will be broadcast live on local television.
The same evening on El Reducto beach in Arrecife, there will the first of 24 musical performances from “Stage Manrique” which will involve some 300 artists performing over 11 days.
The highlight show is called “The Illusion of César,” and is produced by the same company that created the acclaimed show Angaro. The Grand Finale of the show will be on 5th May.
There will also be various exhibitions of Manrique’s works at La Casa amarilla and the MIAC museum at the castle in Arrecife.
Speaking at the launch conference, Pedro San Gines said he hoped “as the artist would have liked, that it is a celebration of Lanzarote, better yet, a celebration of the future of Lanzarote.”
There are many more events and celebrations planned as part of Manrique 100, and we’ll add the detail here as soon as the information is released, together with detailed programmes and timings for the April celebrations.
