The Agroncanarias Contests are held throughout the year with the aim to provide some exposure to products grown and produced in the Canary Islands such as extra virgin olive oil, wine, cider, cheese, gofio and sea salt and reward the best ones.
The Sea Salt Contest announced this year’s winners earlier this week in La Palma and a total of 5 medals and 3 distinctions were awarded.
12 sea salts from 6 different companies had entered:
-6 samples from 3 salt manufacturers in Gran Canaria
-2 samples from 1 manufacturers each in La Palma, Fuerteventura and Lanzarote.
These and many other of their products can be bought at the premises, of course. I am positive I have seen the coarse sea salt one in supermarkets and the fleur de sal in delicatessen type of style shops. There are 2 main categories in the contest: Virgin Sea Salt and Fleur de Sal. And also, a bunch of special mentions for Best Innovation, image & presentation, Best Ecological Sea Salt and Best Sea Salt overall. The prizes are awarded after a blind tasting by 11 experts.
Lanzarote entries in the 2024 edition are from Salinas de Janubio and both have won a gold medal each, one of each category:
– “Sal Marina Janubio Gruesa” has won a Great Gold medal on the Virgin Sea Salt category
– “Flor de Sal” has won a Gold medal on the Fleur de Sal category
It’s great to see the local produce not only being commercialised but also being promoted and acknowledged!
You can see a small little summary of this contest here:
Our congratulations to all the winners but specially, of course, to Lanzarote’s Salinas de Janubio.
Mike and Julie did a very interesting guided tour of the Salinas de Janubio, located in the southwest of Lanzarote, a while back. You can read more about this award-winning salt manufacturer here: https://lanzaroteinformation.co.uk/salinas-de-janubio-lanzarote. And why not? Maybe visit them next time you visit Lanzarote!
