Lanzarote Restaurant Review – Oriental World, Puerto Del Carmen

Oriental World

I have to be honest about this. I’ve driven, walked, cycled and run past Oriental World countless times over the years and have never been persuaded to try it. My instinct has always been to avoid places that offer too many different types of cuisine, and Oriental World covers Chinese, Japanese, Thai and Vietnamese! However, friends had highly recommended the restaurant, so we met with them there one evening.

The place is vast, basically a huge open fronted space, right on Puerto del Carmen‘s Avenida. It’s beautifully decorated in the Oriental style, and spotlessly clean. We arrived before our friends, who had booked the table, but we were ushered in for a drink while we waited for them, and were shown to a prime table at the front of the restaurant, from where we would watch a spectacular sunset during the course of the evening. Despite being open fronted, the restaurant has a cracking AC system that keeps everyone cool.

The menu at Oriental World is simply huge, and offers all the key dishes you would expect from the four styles of cuisine. After deliberating for some time, we finally chose our food.

I went for the Dim Sum starter with the other chap in our party doing the same, and the ladies went for a Crispy chicken salad and a Sushi starter. The presentation of all the dishes, especially the Sushi, was exceptional. The dim sum was amazing – light and delicate steamed dumpling, served in the steaming basket, with a variety of finely minced fillings and a spicy sauce. The crispy chicken salad was a very large portion, but I found the chicken a little dry and lacking in seasoning.

Onto the mains! Highly recommend by my friend Neill, I went for the Mongolian Beef. It was, without question, one of the best Asian dishes I’ve eaten. Strips of fillet steak, perfectly cooked and butter tender, stir fried with vegetables and a sauce that perfectly balanced, sweet, sour, spicy and salty – a genuine show stopper of a dish. Julie went for Yakitori prawns – glazed prawns on a skewer, with a gingery, sweet coating. Again perfectly balanced flavours.

The service was very good – they have so many staff – there was never a moment when we had to look around for someone to get drinks topped up, or to ask for the bill.

I’m happy to say, my preconceptions about Oriental World proved to be incorrect, and I’m very happy to recommend the place to readers.

As well as the A la Carte options we chose, they also offer set menus, a tasting menu and children’s menus.

You’ll find them pretty much in the middle of The Strip at Avenida de Playas 18, on the corner of Calle Doramas. You can call to book on +34 928515997

Oriental World is open every day from 1200 to midnight. Their website is here: Oriental World.
