Each year The Cabildo releases a document of statistics relating to the island, and we distill it into key numbers for your below.
This report relates to the year 2024 and was issued in May 2025:
Population
The island’s population increased to 163,230 people made up of 23% foreigners, the rest being Spanish nationals.
The top five foreign populations were:
- Colombians – 7,121
- British – 6,524
- Italians – 4,317
The total population by municipality in order:
- Arrecife – 68,025
- Teguise – 23,762
- Tias – 21,456
- San Bartolomé – 19,664
- Yaiza – 17,901
- Tinajo – 6,832
- Haria – 5,590
Economy
The island had a record 76,640 people in work and paying social security in 2024. There were a total of 5,089 companies on the island:
- 85% in the service sector
- 8.8% in the construction sector
- 3.2% in the industrial sector
- 35 in the agricultural sector
The number of unemployed on the island fell to a record low of 7,267, halving over the last ten years.
Tourism
Just over 3.4 million tourists visited the island, an all time record. By country, the top five were:
- United Kingdom – 50.6%
- Ireland 10.5%
- Germany 10.25%
- Spain 8.6%
- France 6.9%
Of the official attractions, Timanfaya was the most visited at just under a million, followed by Jameos del Agua at 883,00 and Cueva de los Verdes at 585,000.
Society
The average price of houses sold rose to 2463 € per square meter.
The total number of crimes reported rose by 4.2% to 7,285. There were no murders on the island. Types of crime that fell were robberies with violence and robberies by forced entry. Types that rose were drug trafficking and theft from cars.
Transport
Cruise ship passengers arriving into Arrecife rose to a record 610,000 up 70% over the last ten years.
Cargo tonnage into the port of Arrecife also hit a record high, up 32% in the same period.
8.7 million passengers used Cesar Manrique airport, with 71,605 aircraft movements.
The islands buses carried 8.2 million passengers up 15% on the previous year.
