We joined many islanders yesterday at the grand opening of the new boutique 4 star hotel La Isla y El Mar, in Puerto del Carmen.
Update: The hotel became a five star in December 2018.
We were last there in December, to see how construction was going and to meet the architect, José Maria Pérez.
The property was originally called Balcón del Mar, but the massive investment has totally transformed it into a chic, beautifully detailed, very high quality hotel. All of the work commissioned has been done by Canarian companies, 80% of them from Lanzarote.
The rooms are all suites, with Nespresso coffee machines, large flat screen TV’s and docking stations. Guests are given a tablet which they can use to order room service, book meals or find out more about the hotel, and of course, there is Wifi throughout. Higher grade suites have a private hot tub on the patio.
One key feature, insisted upon by owners Grupo Martínez Hermanos, is that La Isla y El Mar is “CO2 zero,” which means it has no carbon footprint. This has been achieved by an incredibly complex air conditioning system, using geothermal energy, low energy lighting throughout, and some real thought to the design of the staggeringly beautiful stainless steel sun shades, which look like metal sculptures.
The hotel offers bed and breakfast and half board tariffs, with a choice of a buffet style or a la carte restaurant. The latter features fabulous artwork on the ceiling, and both have amazing views from their floor to ceiling windows.
There are two pools with a pool and snack bar, a chillout area, a small gym and a wellness centre offering treatments, sauna and steam rooms.
It has been a huge investment for the group, and that was reflected in the guests present at the opening, which included Lanzarote Cabildo President Pedro San Ginés, The Canary Island’s tourism minister, María Teresa Lorenzo, local Mayor Pancho Hernández and many well-known business people from the island.
The success of Lani’s Suites and Villa Vik has shown there is a market here for top quality boutique style hotels, and they are both bringing a new type of client to the island, as well as offering existing Lanzarote lovers something really special to enjoy.
