Darragh O'Laoi

Interview with Darragh O’Laoi

I met Darragh O’Laoi for the first time in the summer of 2017 when he was a member of a resident band in a bar in Puerto del Carmen. I hear he is coming back to Lanzarote soon so it’s time to catch up with him and see what this talented young musician is up to now.

Hello Darragh, it’s good to hear you are coming back to Lanzarote soon. Will you have a stage name this time?
I’ll simply go by my name Darragh O’Laoi.

Tell us, where are you from?
I am originally from Cork, Ireland.

This is not your first time in Lanzarote, right?
That’s correct, I have lived in Lanzarote for 8 months before.

What brought you here in the first place?
The love of good weather, beach life and a good music scene.

And how long are you planning on staying this time around?
I haven’t a plan put in place, I’m just going to go with the flow.

That sounds like a good plan. So what do you like about the island?
I love the ocean and the marine life.

Well, you have certainly come to the right place. Talking of which, which is your one place in Lanzarote?
My favourite place in Lanzarote has to be Playa Chica.

It does have a certain magic, doesn’t it? Let’s get back to you music. What do you play?
I play guitar and sing. [And piano, I can vouch that he plays the piano too! ]

Who is your idol and / or inspiration music-wise?
I listen to a lot of people. Foy Vance would be one of my big inspirations.

How would you describe your gigs and your music for someone who’s never heard you before?
I would like to say they are high energy, great craic and plenty of laughing to be had at m gigs, with a lot of crowd interaction.

Again, I can vouch for that, hahaha. Do you have any special projects coming up?
I’m hoping to finish my first album this year.

Well, good luck with that and keep us posted of the album’s progress!

Sure, I will. In the meantime you can see where I’m playing on Facebook which is Darragh O’Laoi. Also you can find me on instagram as Darraghmusic_11

Great, thanks for your time. Looking forward to catching you gigging as a solo act over the next few months around Lanzarote!
