Sara Protectora is one of Lanzarote’s longest established charities. For over 30 years, they have been offering a shelter for abandoned animals, running sterilisation campaigns and educating children on the island to raise awareness about animal welfare.
At their premises in Tahiche, they house around 180 dogs and a similar number of cats, all cared for by a team of staff and volunteers. They typically rehome around 800 animals each year, and they estimate they have saved the lives of over 30,000 since the charity was started. The Lanzarote Information dog Louie, sadly no longer with us, was a Sara rescue dog and we miss really miss him.
Sara relies on donations to provide food and medical care for the animals, and one of the ways they raise money is with their regular, and very popular second hand markets. With the current lockdown, the market isn’t running, so a primary source of their income has dried up.
Jilly Simmons, a long time resident of the island, works hard all year round in support of Sara, and she also keeps us informed about what’s going on there, and the various events in Tahiche.
Jilly has written a recipe book, as a means to raise funds for Sara – it has over 150 vegan and vegetarian recipes, and is handily spiral bound, so it stays open when you’re following the recipes, as well as having a wipe clean cover.
