Club Las Calas is one of Puerto del Carmen’s original holiday complexes, located in an almost perfect position in the centre of the resort for easy access to the famous avenida’s beach, bars and restaurants. With a steady repeat clientele for 30 years, you probably won’t have seen it featured in holiday brochures or shouted about on-line.

We visited recently to find out more about the place, to see the improvements that have been made there over the years, and to learn what keeps people coming back year after year.

The first thing is it’s actually much bigger than we imagined! There are four parts to it, each formed around a swimming pool, so although there is plenty of accommodation there, you never feel you are in a huge complex  – each part feels quite intimate.

The facilities are superb:

  • The pools (there are four in total) are all heated
  • All the apartments have the main British television channels
  • There is free Wifi available on the resort
  • There’s a gym with sauna and even a squash court
  • The children’s club, with Charlie Bear, looks good fun
  • There are two great Food and Beverage facilities on site
  • There’s even a Mini shop on site

The big news is that all of the apartments are being totally refurbished, in fact most have already been done, and we wanted to see them. Obviously the decor is all new, but the biggest change is in the kitchens, which are modern and stylish. Club Las Calas is a self catering resort, and you can actually cook properly in the apartments! Every kitchen has an induction hob, full oven and microwave and the fridge is a full size one – no more struggling to fit the sangria and beers in once you’ve stocked up with food!

The bathrooms have also received a complete makeover, with glass shower screens and power showers.

There are both one and two bedroom apartments and each has either a private balcony or a terrace.

Club Las Calas is a timeshare resort – but you don’t need to be an owner to rent an apartment there – and the timeshare owners make sure everything is kept in top-top condition, but they’ve also added little extras, which benefit those who just want to stay there. For example, there’s a full laundrette on site, so people staying there can wash their clothes. There are shower rooms and luggage storage, so on check out day, you can stay in the sun around the pool until the last possible moment, before showering to get ready for the flight home.

One bedroom apartments start at £445 per week and the two beds are £590 per week. There’s also an innovative offer for people who come for a visit and fall in love with the place – you can pre-buy five years worth of holidays at the resort, fixing the price at today’s rates.

The hardest part of writing something like this is in trying to capture the “atmosphere” of a place. I can only describe it as “happy!” We spoke to people staying there, the reception team, the animation team and the resort manager, and everyone just seemed to be happy to be there, and to contribute to the lovely, relaxed holiday feeling around the place.

If you’re looking for somewhere to stay in central Puerto del Carmen, which offers genuine self catering apartments and plenty of other facilities, we’d highly recommend trying Club Las Calas.

You can find out much more about the resort at the website: Club Las Calas and also at their Facebook page on Twitter and Instagram.
