Charity Corner – Lanzarote’s Little Superhairo!

Lanzarote has its very own Superhairo, don’t you know? Her name is Sofia, she is just 8 years old and her superpowers are her beautiful hair and her big heart.

She has donated her hair while raising money for The Little Princess Trust which was founded in memory of 5-year-old Hannah Tarplee. This charity supplies real-hair wigs available, free of charge, to children and young people who have lost their hair through cancer treatment or other illnesses. Since 2006, they have provided more than 8,000 wigs and they are currently supplying over 100 wigs every month.

Superhairo Sofia is the youngest daughter of Rachel Hicks, an island entrepreneur and her dad is the equally well-known and respected Gazza, from local band Concrete Jungle, which I had the pleasure to interview a while ago. Gazza Interview.

Young Sofia hasn’t really properly cut her hair until now, apart from general trims. A while ago, her mum was getting her hair coloured at the hairdressers and she mentioned in passing about Sofia getting hers cut at some stage. That’s when the idea to donate it to charity for kids with cancer first popped into the scene. When Sofia heard this, she asked what it was… and Sofia made her choice: she was going to do it! So, her mum said that if she grew it until the summer to try to get a bit more length, it wouldn’t be as short when it would get chopped… and it would get the chance to grow up a bit before returning to school. Sofia has been mega exited with the idea, knowing that it will go to someone who needs it.

The aim was to give 12 inches of hair and Sofia’s mum set up the online fundraiser (link below) with a goal of €550 which is what it costs to have one wig made.

The actual event took place at the Cafe her mum owns & runs, Cafe de la Plaza in Puerto Calero on the afternoon of Tuesday the 15th of June. The hairdresser who performed the chop was Gabrielle Dale of Peluquería Amanda in La Asomada. And of course, Marc & Gazza from Concrete Jungle provided the soundtrack to this very special day.

Parallel to the fundraiser event, a collection of food for the people in need in the island was carried out. They managed to collect 5 bags full of food which will be donated to local charity “Help Us Help Them” who are assisting those in need.

Before the day of the chop, they had already raised nearly €1,500 -between the online donations and raffle tickets- so they have totally smashed the initial figure. Including the money raised from drink sales on the day and other bits and pieces they have reached the amazing amount of €2,431 on the actual day of the chop! What an absolutely amazing job! Congratulations to all involved, especially Sofia, Lanzarote’s Superhairo!

The donations link will remain open until the end of the June, so you are still on time to make a contribution, no matter how small!
