“No one is useless in this world who lightens the burden of it to anyone else.”
Charles Dickens.
This is the quote #retoSolidarios started their media package with. Let’s find out more about them.
Who is #retoSolidarios?
It’s a non-profit initiative and through sport challenges they raise money for charity. Initially the idea came out of group of friends that wanted to do a different kind of journey together, mixing sport and nature. Afterwards when they decided to do it with a charity goal, they set themselves up as an association to be able to centralise and channel all their activity. Let me introduce you to:
– Ayose Tejera, high level sportsman, nowadays more linked to the MTB world.
– Toño Cedrés, a graduate in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, linked to the world of handball. Managing Director of Personal Fit Club. Physical trainer of the female handball team of 1st national category.
– Rubén Toribio, also a graduate in Physical Activity and Sport Sciences, linked to sports both personally and professionally. Managing Director of MC2Action, he manages the training of athletes such as Lionel Morales and other high-level athletes in Lanzarote.
2023 Challenge
As you can gather from the title of this article, these 3 amigos are going to cycle through the 8 Canarian Islands in 7 days, starting on the 2nd of June and finishing on the 8th . That means that they will cover 755Km with a cumulative difference in altitude of more than 17,000 metres. Quite impressive, isn’t it? These are the stages of the challenge:
2nd June: La Graciosa
3rd June: Lanzarote and Fuerteventura
4th June: Gran Canaria
5th June: Tenerife
6th June: El Hierro
7th June: La Gomera
8th June: La Palma
In aid of…
The charity they have chosen this year to raise fund for is called “Acompañar Lanzarote” – Facebook page. It’s a charity dedicated to the attention of patients with serious illness and people going through grieving processes, tending both the sick and their relatives. They also work in the area of suicide prevention and to keep company to people who are on their own. “Acompañar” means to accompany in Spanish, a very appropriate name as you can see.
They have over 100 appointments monthly and they have been working for more than 30 years. Solitary, complex but necessary work that has had little visibility until now. They have a very limited budget of about €5,000 yearly, mainly coming from charity donations and the work of their volunteers.
Therefore #retoSolidarios’ goal is to ensure that €5,000 is reached to ensure they can keep doing their work one more year.
