Can You Use UK Disabled Badge In Lanzarote?

Blue Badge Lanzarote

In the 1980’s the European Union developed an EU wide system, to enable disabled people to park their cars close to where they needed to be. Part of the scheme involved requiring businesses and town halls to set up dedicated parking for people with disabilities.

As the United Kingdom was part of the EU at the time, they were part of the Blue Badge scheme. With Brexit, in January 2020, the UK chose to withdraw from the EU’s blue badge scheme and instead, set up their own system.

Some EU countries have reached bilateral agreements with the UK to allow blue badge holders from that country to use their cards.

Here in Spain, the blue badge process is dealt with on a municipal, rather than a national basis, so it’s not possible to say the UK blue badge is accepted across Spain.

However, here in The Canaries, the UK blue badge has effectively been accepted on the islands since Brexit and we have many readers who use their blue badge in Lanzarote to park in disabled spaces.

We would advise printing the translation shown below and putting that next to the badge on the dashboard, purely as a precaution.
