More Than One Third Of Island Residents Are Foreign
From the latest population figures for the period July 2024 to the same month in 2025 – Lanzarote’s resident population has risen to 167,341. Of those, 57,592 are foreigners, accounting for 34% of Lanzarote’s total. Although 66% of the population has Spanish nationality, only 44% of island residents were actually born in Lanzarote.
LZ1 Resurfacing
Three sections of the LZ1, the main road to the north of the island, will be resurfaced over the winter. The road, which was inaugurated in the early 2000’s, has deteriorated in recent months. The project has a budget of 460,000 € and will include new signage.
Costa Teguise Sewage Project Awarded
The 2 million Euro project to renew the sewage system in Costa Teguise has been awarded to Compañía General de Construcciones Abaldo. From the start of work, the project should take around 20 months and includes two new pumping stations which will take sewage to the main works.
Sanctions Incoming For Pre Fabricated Housing
The Canaries Government has started 44 investigations into the installation of pre fabricated housing – for example container homes, sheds and yurts – on land which is not classified as urban and does not have the necessary permissions. The Minister of Territorial Policy, Manuel Miranda, said “this type of housing does not exempt it from compliance with urban, environmental or territorial regulations.” He stressed that the requirements are the same as for a traditional housing and recalled that they can only be built on urban land and with the corresponding licenses. Of the 44 cases likely to face sanctions, 5 are in Lanzarote. Owners can face fines which range from 6000 to 600,000 Euros.

Lanzarote is the 9th most popular Christmas destination for travellers from mainland Spain according to search engine Kayak. The top three are New York, Tenerife and London.
IKEA Celebrates 20 Years In Lanzarote
The furniture store IKEA celebrates the 20th anniversary of the opening of their store in Arrecife this year. Over the next few weeks there will be a series of special events and “surprises” to mark the event.
FCM Wants Advertisements At Airport Taken Down
The Fundación César Manrique has called for billboard advertisements to be removed at the airport. Large billboards are currently in the outdoor areas and on the route to the coach transfer station. In it’s statement the foundation said: “The FCM considers “incomprehensible the placement of this advertising in the context of an island like Lanzarote, with a tradition of more than half a century away from the visual pollution generated by billboards and large advertisements.”
Shocking Accident In Costa Teguise
A shocking accident in Costa Teguise has left one tourist dead and another seriously injured. It took place at a hotel in Costa Teguise at 1:30 AM in Saturday morning. Two British tourists fell through an aluminium railing – a 56 year old man died from the six metre fall, and a 54 year old man was seriously injured. Police have not confirmed the location yet, but social media posts suggest it was at the Galeón Playa Hotel. An investigation has been started.
Housing Minister Seeks To Limit Sales To Non-Resident Foreigners
The Minister of Housing of the Government of the Canary Islands, Pablo Rodríguez, will travel to Brussels this week to discuss with the EU the possibility of limiting the purchase of property on the islands by non resident foreigners. The Canarian government sees this as a step to prevent foreign speculators from buying properties to rent out, and take them out of the local housing market.
