Lanzarote news in brief week 21

Tourist Spending Close To 200 € Per Day

Tourist spending in Lanzarote averaged 198 € per day in the first three months of this year, according to figures complied by ISTAC. The Lanzarote figure is higher than that of Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Of the total, about half is spent on accommodation, 14.3% on food and 6% on transport.

SARA – 40 Years Of Helping Animals

Sara, the animal rescue charity, is 40 years old. Noe established in premises near Tahiche, the charity was started in 1986, and aimed to help animals that had been subject to abuse, or run over on the roads. One of the first dogs they cared for was named Sara, and the organisation took her name. Currently its facilities are home to almost 400 animals – about 130 dogs and about 270 cats, and over the decades Sara has rescued tens of thousands.

Best Classic Tapas Bar In The Canaries

Bar Stop in Yaiza, established in 1890 has been voted the Best Classic Tapas Bar in The Canaries at an event in Madrid. The bar is also the oldest in Lanzarote.

Misunderstanding Causes Search For Missing Woman

A call was made to emergency services on Monday, during which they were told a woman had been swept into the sea at El Golfo. The caller said they had seen the lady hit by a wave and that she didn’t then exit the water. A search was started by the coast guard and a helicopter and which continued into Tuesday. It was then called off because nobody had been reported missing and there were no abandoned vehicles in the area. Police are still investigating but currently they are saying this could have been a “misunderstanding.”

Scooter Rider Travelling at 100KMH

Car drivers filmed and shared video of an electric scooter rider, travelling at 100KMH uphill on the LZ20. Police are investigating.

High Temperatures To Continue

The heatwave is set to remain on the islands until mid week. There is a yellow alert currently, with up to 37 degrees possible in parts of Lanzarote. There is also high ultra violet radiation currently, so people are warned not to spend too long in the sun. The temperature in Haria was recorded at 31.6 degrees at 09:00 on Monday morning by the weather service.

Ironman Winners

The final Ironman Lanzarote organised by Club La Santa was a great success over the weekend, with around 1,400 athletes from 61 countries taking the start. French triathlete Sam Laidlow and British athlete Lucy Charles were crowned champions.

Record Year For Wind Power

2025 was a record year for the generation of electricity by Lanzarote’s wind farms. In total they produced 79,159 megawatt hours, with 15,611 coming from the new wind farm in San Bartolomé, which only started operating in the middle of the year.

EV Chargers In All 7 Municipalities

The Cabildo has announced that there are now EV Chargers in all 7 municipalities of the island, stating that when the current government was elected, there were only 3.
