Earthquake Off The Coast

A small earthquake took place in the early hours of Thursday morning. The quake registered 2.5 on the Richter scale, and the epicentre was about 25 KM off the coast of the island, and 6 KM deep.

More Wine Awards

Lanzarote wines were once again on the podium at the AWC Vienna 2025 and EcoVino contest in Logroño. Bodega La Geria won a silver medal for its La Geria Tinto Ecológico wine and a special mention for its Manto Malvasía Volcánica Seco. Bodegas El Grifo has been awarded a gold in the EcoVino contest for its Harvest Experience Tablero de Uga – Finca Ramón. The event brought together 4,572 wines from 39 countries.

Unemployment Falls Again

Unemployment on the island fell again in April, down 206 from the previous month, and 672 versus the same time last year.

Interest Rate Drops

The Euribor interest rate fell to 2.148% at the end of April, reducing mortgage rates across the EU. Experts are predicting a further reduction in the summer, which could lead to increased property sales, as mortgages become more attractive.

San Bartolomé Wind Farm Operational

The wind farm at San Bartolomé is now operational and producing about 9.2 megawatts. Lanzarote currently has five wind farms in Arrecife, Teguise, San Bartolomé, Punta Grande and Los Valles, and a total wind power of 40.7 MW, which means that, at specific times, 35 % of the energy consumed in the Lanzarote-Fuerteventura electrical system comes from this clean energy.

Protest Planned for 18th May

A demonstration has been called for 18th May asking for “substantial changes in the economic and tourist model of the island to guarantee basic services to the population and respect for the natural environment and protected areas.” The group will meet at the music kiosk in Arrecife at 11:00 and walk to The Cabildo, where they will present a manifesto with their demands.

LZ2 Maciot – Playa Blanca Road Open

The road between Maciot and Playa Blanca has reopened after being completely resurfaced at a cost of 1.1 Million Euros. The 5.6 KM stretch was re-opened two days earlier that planned.

Balearics Ask AENA To Stop Increasing Flights

The Balearic Islands have asked the Spanish Airports Authority not to offer any more slots for flights into the Mediterranean islands, asking them to limit the number of flights to the maximum level per month in 2024. This is in response to the fact that the Balearics consider they have reached a level of “Tourist Saturation.”

Project To Encourage Recycling Gray Water

Currently Lanzarote only recycles 6.7% of its grey water – water that has been used for washing or cleaning, but that does not contain human waste. A new project is underway, with the objective of dramatically increasing that percentage. The AguaRenace project, a Canarian initiative, seeks to turn Lanzarote into a pioneer in gray water recycling and give this fundamental resource a second life. Grey water is that is generated in showers, sinks, washing machines, sinks or after cleaning. The proposed system is called Agualoop and an installation can process water using a series of filters and aeration, and without any chemicals.

First Quarter Tourists Numbers A Historic High For Islands

In the first three months of this year, a total of 4.3 million tourists visited The Canaries, a record number and a 2.1% increase on 2024, which was also a record.

Chamber Of Commerce Shares Data On Taxi Service Issues

CAMARA presented a study to The Cabildo this month sharing information about the taxi service on the island and how it is perceived by users. As well as suggesting that a taxi service app is essential for the island, over 90% of people surveyed were in favour of taxis being able to pick up from anywhere on the island, and 62% were in favour of allowing Uber or Cabify to operate in Lanzarote.

UD Lanzarote Fail To Reach Promotion Play Offs

UD Lanzarote lost 2-1 to CD Mensajero at the weekend, ending their hopes of achieving a play off place for promotion.

Santa Rosa Ultrabike Cancelled With Late Notice

The annual Santa Rosa Ultrabike challenge was cancelled just a few days before the vent was due to run, after an environmental report warned of the possible impact of the route in a bird nesting area. Many athletes had already travelled to the island and paid for accommodation, and they were understandably disappointed.

1150 Athletes Registered For Ironman

Ironman Lanzarote takes place on 17th May, and this year, there are 1,150 athletes from 60 countries, registered to take part. The event consists of a 3.8KM ocean swim, a 180KM bike ride around the island, and a 42.2KM marathon on the promenade.
