Salvatore Is Awake

The young Italian man, Salvatore Sinagra, who was brutally assaulted in Matagorda, has woken up after 16 days in a coma. The 30 year old, from Sicily, was working in a hotel on the island when the attack happened. His attacker was arrested and is currently under prison without bail, awaiting trial.

Record Spending Budget For The Island

The Cabildo has published their spending budget for 2025, and it’s a record figure of 209 million €, an increase of more than 10% over last year. Highlights include 13 million € for improving the water network and a 200% increase on the money available to purchase land and properties for social housing.

Cruise Marketing Begins For Playa Blanca

The Mayor of Yaiza confirmed this week that the marketing exercise to persuade lines running small, boutique cruise ships to choose Playa Blanca as a docking port, is underway. The hope is for the first shops to dock there in 2026, and 2025 will be spent preparing the port facilities.

Playa Honda Underpass Open In March

The works to create a new underpass under the LZ2 in Playa Honda are nearing completion, and should be fully open in March. The project was started in April 2024.

20 New Bus Drivers Start Training

A group of 20 new drivers started a training course this week, which will see them quality to work on the Lanzarote bus services. The training is being funded by a project called “Employment on wheels.”

Roadworks Complete On Puerto del Carmen’s Avenida

The resurfacing works in the first section on Avenida de las Playas, The Strip, in Puerto del Carmen have been completed and the road is once again open to traffic.

Castillo Santa Barbara Open Again

Castillo Santa Barbara, the iconic castle that overlooks La Villa de Teguise has re-opened. The castle houses a history of Teguise, which will be built upon on the coming months and years. It’s open from 10:00 until 15:00 seven days a week.

Lights On In Costa Teguise

The new promenade lights, in the section that runs from The King’s House to Playa Bastian, have been switched on. The rest will follow soon.

Low Temps At Night

Several parts of the island recorded unusually low temperatures overnight on Tuesday night, with the lowest being San Bartolomé where it was 7.1 degrees. Daytime temperatures have been in the mid 20’s so it’s an unusual swing for Lanzarote.

High Average Temps & Low Rainfall

January was one of the warmest on record for the island, with the average temperature 0.9 degrees higher than average. Rainfall was also about half the average for the month.

Marketing Campaign On “Fragility Of Lanzarote”

The tourism department has put out to tender a marketing campaign to communicate a strategy of awareness of ethical and responsible tourism in Lanzarote & La Graciosa. The objective is “to promote responsible tourism and respect for the environment, promote knowledge of the particularities of the landscape and places of interest of Lanzarote and La Graciosa, and involve the local, business and visitor population in the collaboration for the protection of the natural and historical legacy of the space.” The project will launch on 30th June and will have an overall budget of 1 million €.

More Taxi Queues At Airport

Readers have reported that the taxi queue at the airport last Saturday was had once again. One said: “waiting an hour for a taxi at an international airport is just not acceptable.” Currently only taxis from San Bartolomé are allowed to pick up at the airport, and there are only 72 available in the municipality.

Manrique’s Fertility Sculpture Back

Manrique’s famous white sculpture La Escultura de la Fecundidad, hs been returned to it’s rightful place, at Monumento Campesino, in the centre of the island, after an extensive refurbishment.
