King And Queen Visit Canary Island’s Stand At Fitur
A large delegation from the islands, including many from Lanzarote, are attending the travel fair Fitur in Madrid this week. Canary Islands President Fernando Clavijo and tourism minister Jéssica de Léon had an opportunity to meet King Felipe and Queen Letizia when they visited the stand.
New Flights To Santander
Binter Canarias has announced a new route to the mainland of Spain. There direct flights every Tuesday and Saturday from Lanzarote. The new service launches on 31st March.
Cyclist Drafting Video Goes Viral
A video showing a cyclist drafting a car on the LZ1 to Órzola has gone viral in local news. Residents are calling for more bike lanes on the island, comparing Lanzarote with Fuerteventura, which boasts more than 225 KM of bike routes.
A Billion € Revenue In 2025
Hotels and apartment complexes generated revenue of more than 1 billion € in 2025 for the first time. Hotels, with an average rate of 142 € per night were responsible for 801 million and apartment complexes, with an average rate of 89 € per night, generated 220 million. Holiday homes added 273 Million in revenue with 32,000 beds available in the sector.
Deiland Winners
Various Christmas prizes were given out at the Deiland Shopping Centre this week, with Erika Estefanía, a resident of Argana Alta, winning a Renault Clio and Guillermo Marlon gathering 3,000 € of shopping in a 30 minute dash.
No End To Winter Rains Yet
The forecast is for more rain this week, and December and January have proved to be the wettest for more than ten years. Teguise recorded the most rainfall in December with 83.6 litres, followed by Yaiza with 72.4 litres.
New Lifeguard Service For Puerto del Carmen
A new contract has been awarded for lifeguard services in Tias, including Puerto del Carmen, after a tender process. The contract, worth 1.6 Million Euros will cover lifeguard services for the municipalities beaches for two years. Lifeguard cover will run from 9AM until 8PM in summer months, and the team will now have three jet skis and a quad.
Colombian Community Largest On Island
Lanzarote’s population includes 24.5% foreign nationals. The Colombian community is now the largest, nearly doubling since 2021 to over 8,000 residents. Conversely, the British community has declined to 5,944 from over 8,000 in the same period.
Italians have seen the most growth since 2011, doubling to 4,346, while Moroccans follow closely in fourth. Germans experienced the sharpest drop, falling to fifth place with 2,204 residents. Other notable trends include a tripling of the Venezuelan population and steady growth from Irish and Chinese communities, while Ecuadorian and Romanian numbers have dwindled. The Irish topped 1,000 residents on the island for the first time in 2025.
Transatlantic Race Record Smashed
The boats that left Lanzarote on 11th January, as part of the annual RORC transatlantic race, reached Antigua in record time thanks to strong winds for the whole crossing. The multihull boat MOD70 Argo blasted from Lanzarote to the Caribbean in under five days to rewrite the record books.
