We were out and about shooting some video in Costa Teguise one very warm evening and needed something to eat. Zaza had been on our radar for some time, as several friends had recommended it.

Zaza is set back from Playa Bastian in the resort – they are at the right hand end, as you face to ocean, of the commercial centre by the car park for Villa Toledo.

We had a very warm welcome from Elena, who served us. She and Paulo, who is the chef / owner are Italian.

They using a menu board system currently, as our visit was post Covid lockdown. The menu isn’t huge, which I generally think is a good thing, but there were some interesting and unusual options on there. There’s a nice selection of tapas, some burgers, which we have heard are excellent, a big choice of salads, and of course, rice, pasta and pizzas.

Friends we ran into there suggested various items, so we went with their suggestions. We shared a starter of Focacia – gorgeous crunchy slices, seasoned and salty, and served with a really pungent and delicious aioli.

For mains we decided to share the prawns cooked with garlic and brandy, and spicy broccoli in a creamy cheese sauce. The prawns were butterflies and perfectly cooked, although I felt they could have done with more sauce, and more brandy! The broccoli was a real revelation – really quite spicy, but tamed by the creamy cheese.

All in all, it was exactly what we were looking for – something really different, not too filling, and washed down with a nice draft beer for me, and an excellent white wine for Julie. We were impressed with the layout – a lovely terrace to watch the sunset, the service and the food, and we’ll be back for sure.

The friends we joined insisted on picking up the bill, which was very kind of them, but based on the menu, our meal would have been around €35.
