I went for a wander around the Old Harbour area of Puerto del Carmen early one morning. The old harbour was previously known as La Tiñosa, Lanzarote.
I started out from Playa Chica, walking along the coastal path. The sea was flat and calm and it was already a lovely warm day, there were a few people fishing from the shore on the rocks there and a small fishing boat attracting seagulls. Around the corner where the Restaurant Puerto Bahia was just setting the tables, I’m always struck by the gardens in this area, beautifully planted and immaculately kept. It was around 9am, the only sounds were the lap of the waves breaking and the odd clink of cutlery.
Walking around the corner I was really pleased to see a children’s play park installed on the site of the old one, ideally situated where parents can enjoy a drink or meal whilst their little ones can run off some energy. Most of the bars and restaurants along here open at 10am for breakfast, if you are looking for an earlier option El Ancla and La Lonja were both open for business.
The Plaza del Varadero was empty, just the stage remained as evidence of the massive live concert that had been there the night before. I continued on across the car park and picked up the wooden decked path to the side of Casa Roja and Island Watersports, it was so quiet you can hear the birds singing and the ducks quacking. There are some quaint houses on the water’s edge along here, imaginative gardens lead down the rocks to the sea. The harbour is teaming with small fish and a few people have come down with stale bread to feed them and the ducks.
I walked to the furthest point along the decking and watched the scene, there was a dog having a swim, a child running along the wooden boards, an hombre with his flat cap and walking stick taking his morning walk – just a perfect start to my day!
