Underwater Museo Atlantico in Lanzarote

The first figures have been submerged at Jason deCaires Taylor’s underwater contemporary art project named Museo Atlantico.

This unique museum opened to visitors on the 25th February 2016 and is accessible accessible by divers as it’s constructed 14m beneath the surface of the sea in Playa Blanca.

Sculptures which are now in place include:

The Rubicon – a group of 35 people walking towards a gate, a point of no return or a portal to another world.

The Raft of Lampedusa – a harrowing depiction of the on going humanitarian crisis, referencing French Romantic painter Théodore Géricault’s work: The Raft of the Medusa. Drawing parallels between the abandonment suffered by sailors in his shipwreck scene and the current refugee crisis, the work is not intended as a tribute or memorial to the many lives lost but as a stark reminder of the collective responsibility of our now global community.

This artificial reef will help to aggregate local species of fish and encourage marine life, as demonstrated by the artists earlier projects in other locations.
