Lanzarote Villas

The term villa is usually used to describe an independent property – in other words, one in it’s own grounds, separate from other properties, and more often than not, with a private swimming pool. Most here are single storey, but you can also find two storey villas, often with a master bedroom suite on the higher floor. And there are a lot of Lanzarote Villas to choose from!

You’ll find villas in all three of the resorts areas on the island – Puerto del Carmen, Costa Teguise and Playa Blanca – and the latter has the most. Playa Blanca was designed as a villa resort from the start, and doesn’t have the apartment complexes so typical of the other resorts.

You’ll also find Lanzarote Villas close to resorts, in places like Puerto Calero, Los Mojones and Las Caletas. And the non resort areas like Arrecife, Playa Honda and Haria have a few each.

The benefits of choosing a villa for a holiday are:

  • You have your own private outdoor space (and usually swimming pool) to enjoy
  • Everyone can choose their bedrooms
  • You aren’t sharing common areas like lounges with other people
  • You cook and eat what you like, when you like
  • You’ll usually find English language TV in villas
  • They tend to be equipped with everything you could possible need
  • You’ll have enough sun beds for everyone
  • It can be an inexpensive option for large groups

But what about the downsides?

  • You’ll have to buy your food
  • ….And then cook it!
  • Normally you’ll be expected to do your own cooking
  • There isn’t “service, ” or staff around that you can ask for advice
  • There isn’t any entertainment
  • Villas can be pricey for couples
  • They’re usually further away from beaches and restaurants than the hotels

We’d always recommend hiring a car if you are planning to stay in a villa – it doesn’t just mean you can get to interesting parts of the island, it also means you’ll be able to do the food shopping for your stay. There’s nothing worse than waiting for a taxi with a trolley full of food and drink!

But Lanzarote Villas aren’t all equal – they range from beautifully kept and equipped luxury villas, looked after by professional property management teams, to old, tired and tatty places with furniture from the 1990’s. That should, of course, be reflected in the price you pay, and many visitors will be happy to go cheap and cheerful, as long as it’s clean.

We’d suggest looking for reviews or asking the owner for reviews when you are in touch with them. Also ask them if the images you’re looking at are up to date. If they’re telling you they are five years old, ask them for some current ones.

Other Considerations

I’d certainly advise choosing a villa with AC for the main summer months here – you may not need it, but if we have a calima, the temperatures can exceed 40 degrees and sleep isn’t easy. Conversely, if you’re here mid-winter, some form of heating can be useful. There aren’t many days when it drops below 20 degrees, but when it does it can feel cool in the evenings.

And also in December through to March, you’ll want a heated swimming pool, not solar powered, but electric heating. Watch out for additional charges to turn it on – they can be pricey.

Do you want to watch TV while on holiday? In that case ask what’s available. Typically, UK or Irish channels are only available via the internet.

Which leads me onto WIFI – every property should have decent internet, but ask as some owners don’t consider it.

When to book Lanzarote Villas

Lanzarote Villas are in really high demand at the moment, and the good ones are often booked  a year ahead, especially at peak periods like school holidays and Christmas.

Our advice is to book as soon as you can and get it reserved.

Summary

There’s a big choice of Lanzarote Villas, but it’s worth spending a little extra time before booking to make sure you’re getting what you want and need for your holiday. If you pick the wrong place, there’s not much anyone can do, whereas if you find yourself in a duff hotel room, it’s usually easy to change rooms.
