I’d heard good things about the Devon Restaurant and Bar and, being from the west country myself, I had been intending to give it a try. The opportunity arose when I won a steak dinner for two in a Monster Radio competition.
The restaurant is a small, cosy family-run place on the front at Matagorda, near the Jameos Playa Hotel. As we intended to arrive early, we didn’t book a table, but there weren’t many not reserved so we were lucky to get in.
There was a warm welcome from the management and staff who were happy to serve us with our free meals. The steak dinner includes a 10oz sirloin, home-made chunky chips, peas, mushrooms, grilled tomato and home-made onion rings, along with a choice of sauces. A soft drink, glass of wine or large Estrella is also included.
The steaks were cooked exactly as we’d ordered them. The home-made chips and onion rings really made the meal stand out from other places which use frozen.
The Devon Restaurant steak nights are on a Tuesday and Saturday and normally cost €24. Their other speciality nights are gourmet burgers on Monday and home-made pies on Thursday and all-day fish special on Friday.
You can of course order from the main menu which is available from 11am. There are breakfast and snacks as well as the dinner menu, all with vegetarian options.
The starters include home-made soup, sweet chilli beef and wild mushroom Arancini. As well as the grill options, the main courses range from sausage and mash, and macaroni cheese to apricot and blue cheese stuffed chicken breast, roasted salmon and wild mushroom risotto. Children’s meals are available and have a free ice cream dessert included.
We left with the feeling that the family have a passion for good food and I can recommend giving it a try.
