After a long gap of 16 years, the Cabildo has brought back the Outstanding Sports People awards, “Destacados del Deporte”.
The long awaited event gathered more than 300 people on Monday 13th March, 2023 at the Monumento al Campesino where the awards ceremony took place.
The president of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, María Dolores Corujo, presided over the ceremony, together with the councillor of Sports, Alfredo Mendoza, a gala that wanted to highlight the constancy and achievements of over a dozen sportsmen and women and sports entities.
María Dolores Corujo congratulated the award winners in her speech, describing the event as “a night of emotions and a night of justice”. “You are the protagonists today, although we know that not all of you are here”, she said before encouraging the multitude of high level sportsmen and women of Lanzarote and La Graciosa to continue working “to achieve their dreams and goals”.
The island president stated that, beyond competitive results, sport, as well as health, is one of the elements that define Lanzarote as a destination, alluding to the Sports-Tourism tandem (no sports pun intended!) that brings so much success to our island.
For his part, the councillor Alfredo Mendoza also congratulated the winners, thanking the expert Jury of these awards, as well as the work done by the staff of the Island Sports Service.
More than 300 people, with a wide representation of clubs, federations, institutional representatives and associations working in the sector, gathered in the hall of the Monumento al Campesino to attend the awards ceremony, in a lively evening hosted by the journalist Sara Duarte and with the musical participation of the Lanzarote band “Bohemia”.
The awards ceremony also included a video of the person or entity in each category, as well as the brief and applauded speeches given by the award winners after receiving their trophy.
