Calima This Week

AEMET has warned that there will be another calima this week, arriving on Wednesday, with temperatures as high as 30 degrees expected, with a moderate north easterly wind. The calima should only last until Thursday, and there may be some moderate rain.

Locals Do Not Like New Parking In Famara

The main road through Caleta de Famara has been made one way, creating 200 more “Nose in” parking places to accommodate the number of visitors to the area, but locals have signed a petition criticising the visual effect of the changes and suggesting the village is being turned into a parking lot.

Sardine Burial Ends Arrecife Carnival

Carnival officially ended in Arrecife on Wednesday, with the annual burning of the sardine on the beach. The bands and floats will now make their way around to island to celebrate carnival in all the other towns and resorts.

Housing Law Changes Proposed

The Canarian government has proposed a draft housing law in the parliament this week. Among several changes aimed at creating more affordable housing, is a provision for the government to buy unfinished properties on the islands and convert them into affordable housing. It is estimated that there are around 3,000 properties that fall into this category, where developers have gone bust, or the banks have repossessed partly built properties.

Car Crashes In Car Showroom During Police Chase

Three passengers were unhurt when the car they were travelling in crashed though the window at Orvecame’s Fiat dealership in Playa Honda. The driver had passed through a Guardia Civil checkpoint, and police were chasing it at the time the driver lost control. One window of the dealership and a new car inside were damaged in the accident. The driver was tested positive for drugs and alcohol.

Record Visitors For January

Lanzarote Airport recorded 671,415 passengers in January, an increase of 6.9% over the previous year, according to statistics provided by AENA.

Cabildo Asks For More Taxi Co-Operation

Hours long queue for taxis in Arrecife following carnival events over the weekend prompted The Cabildo to ask once again for inter municipality co-operation, which would allow taxis from other areas to pick up passengers.
