Lanzarote News In Brief – Week 51

8 Million Passengers!

On Wednesday of this week, Lanzarote Airport passed a historic milestone, when the 8 millionth passenger of the year travelled through so far this year. Air traffic has grown 12% this year to date, with 34 airlines connecting the island with 83 destinations in 34 countries.

Wine D.O. Is 30

The Regulatory Council for the Designation of Origin of the Wines of Lanzarote was inaugurated on December 14, 1993 to certify the origin and guarantee the quality of the wines produced on the island, making it thirty years old this week.

Second Tug For Arrecife

A second tug has been commissioned at Arrecife’s cruise port, which will mean there will no longer be a need for cruise ships to divert in certain weather conditions. The two tugs are called “Mencey,” and “Guanche.”

Quemao Class Underway

Monday was the first day of the 8th edition of the Quemao Class surf contest at Famara. As usual, Lanzarote served up the most spectacular waves, with huge tubes.

Stabbing In Charco del Palo

A 41 year old man was arrested and will appear in court on a charge of attempted homicide after an argument between two men late at night in Charco del Palo. The perpetrator fled the scene while emergency services treated the victim, but police later tracked him down. The victim is in intensive care in Arrecife Hospital.

Unusually High Temperatures

The southerly wind this week is leading to unusually high temperatures for the time of year, with daytime temperatures in the mid to high 20’s. Some haze is expected in the middle of the week.

Airport Taxi Queues Back

Last Saturday, there was a huge queue for taxis at the airport, as the island had one of the busiest days of the year for arrivals.

New Maritime Rescue Boat For Lanzarote

Guardamar Urania is a new 40 metre maritime rescue vessel which arrived in Arrecife this week and will begin work in the waters around the island. Urania can reach speeds of 30 knots and has a range of 1450 nautical miles.

Man Arrested For Taking Angel Shark

A man was arrested last week after he posted videos online showing him spearing an Angel Shark and then cutting the shark into portions. The species is protected.
