Yacht Hits Rocks – One Dead
The yacht Mai Tai ran aground on rocks off the coast of Tinajo in the early hours of Wednesday morning. Two crew members were rescued and a third declared missing, sparking a helicopter and boat search. His body was eventually found. All three crew were Russian citizens.
James Villas Closing Business
James Villas, part of the Awaze Group announced this morning, 30th October, that they are closing the business.
All existing James Villas customers are being contacted this week about their bookings with the brand, which has around 600 guaranteed villas across Europe. Customers with bookings that return on or before November 30 will be unaffected by the closure and their breaks will go ahead as planned. Customers whose bookings are cancelled after this date will be given a full refund and the option to book another Awaze Group property. Villa owners impacted are also being contacted this week.
New Bus Company Office
The Bus Company has opened a new office at the Intercambiador (interchange) in Arrecife. Customers will now be able to purchase and top up their Bono cards there, as well as request information about all of the island’s bus routes. It is open from 09:00 until 17:00.
Waikiki Founder Dies
Alexander Müller died this week at the age of 76. He opened the famous Waikiki in Puerto del Carmen’s Centro Atlantico in 1981 and ran it until it closed in 2007.
Firefighters Rescue Dog
Firefighters abseiled down the Risco de Famara at the weekend to rescue a hunting dog that had become trapped on the cliffs, unable to climb up or down.
Tribute To Cannery Workers
A statue has been erected on the Via Medular in Arrecife to commemorate the cannery workers, 80% of them women, who canned sardines on the island in the 60’s and 70’s, a time when Lanzarote had 90% of the Spanish sardine fleet based here, and the business accounted for 70% of the island’s GDP.
Military Flights Around The Islands This Week
A training exercise called “Ocean Sky” will take place over the coming two weeks, involving around 50 aircraft from Spain, Italy, France, Turkey, Greece and Portugal. Aircraft types will include F16’s F18’s and Eurofighters.
Binter Flights To Madrid
Canaries Airline, Binter Canarias will offer direct flights to Madrid for the first time ever. Using three of their fleet of Embraer jets, based in Madrid, they will run 4 flights a week from Las Palmas and another 4 from Tenerife North. Connecting flights from Lanzarote to either will be included free of charge.
Another Skeleton Coming Down In Costa Teguise
Work has become on the demolition of another “Skeleton” building in Costa Teguise, on the plot known as 242B, which is almost opposite Sands Beach Resort.
Monumento Campesino To Undergo Restoration
Manrique’s tribute to farmer’s, Monumento Campesino will undergo a restoration in the coming months. Rust will be removed and the monument will be repainted. The 15 metre high monument was created in 1969 and is in the geographical centre of the island.
