Violent Passengers Cause Flight Diversion
An easyJet flight from Manchester, heading to Tenerife, diverted to Lanzarote on Friday, because of the threat of eight violent passengers. Faced with what they considered a dangerous situation on board, the crew requested an immediate landing and were guided into Lanzarote, where the aircraft was met by Policia Nacional officers. The aircraft subsequently flew to Tenerife with the remaining passengers and arrived two hours later than planned.
High Temperature Warning For The Weekend
The health department has issued a high temperature warning for this weekend, with high’s into the mid 30’s and the chance of some Saharan sand in the air.
Fire At Papagayo Shopping Centre
Centro Commercial Papagayo, in Playa Blanca, was evacuated on Thursday after a fire broke out in a basement. Firefighters were able to rescue two cats from the fire, but a third was found dead. Electricity was cut off to the centre, which suffered smoke damage.
French Tourism Growing Fast
The number of tourists visiting The Canaries from France has grown by a third since 2019 and the sector is the fastest growing one currently for the islands.
€1.2 Million Investment In Bus Service
Arrecife Bus had invested €1.2 million into improving their service, with 5 new buses, which will give half hourly services between Playa Blanca and Arrecife, and also the information boards on bus stops.
Tragedy In Puerto del Carmen
A 57 year old lady died tragically in Puerto del Carmen this week. She was swimming between Playa Los Pocillos and Matagorda and was pulled from the water by some other swimmers, in cardiac arrest. Lifeguards carried out CPR on her for 25 minutes, but they were unable to revive her.
Lady Run Over In Costa Teguise
A 40 year old lady was hit by a vehicle in Costa Teguise on Wednesday morning. She suffered serious injuries and was taken to hospital in Arrecife.
New Baggage Handling For Airport
Two new companies will be taking over the baggage handling service at Lanzarote from the middle of next year, after AENA, the airports authority for Spain made a decision to stop using Swissport. Belgian company Aviapartner and the Spanish firm Groundforce will take control. The new operators have promised at least 80% of their vehicle fleet will be electric, and baggage will be delivered 20% faster than currently.
40 Years Of Puerto Calero
Puerto Calero is 40 years old this week. The Marina and housing there was the dream of José (Pepe) Calero, who founded a company in 1983 to develop the land and marina. The marina opened in 1989, and in laters years added the first dock suitable for super yachts.
Bodegas La Grieta First To Bottle
The Punta Mujeres based Bodega was the first to bottle a 2023 wine this year, having produced 3,000 bottles of their Malvasia Volcánica.
Wine Tours Team In UK
The team from Wine Tours Lanzarote, Ollie, Dan and Anita are heading to London to promote Lanzarote wines at the first ever Volcanic Wines of the World trade and consumer fair in London. They will be showcasing 17 Lanzarote wines from 12 producers. The event is on 2nd October at 1 Whitehall Place.
Fobos Wind Toy Returning To Tahiche
The restoration of the famous Fobos Wind Toy is going well, and it is expected that it will be back in place on the Roundabout close to the Foundation Cesar Manrique in December.
Potatoes From UK Back
The importation of potatoes from the UK has restarted, after the Ministry Agriculture, Fisheries and Food of the Government of Spain approved imports from the UK, with the exception of those from the county of Kent, where the Colorado Beetle has been detected.
Accommodation Revenues Up 9%
The revenue earned in August by hotels and complexes increased to €90.7 million, up 9% on the 2022 figure. The average rate per night in hotels was €144.50 and complexes €86. Currently there are 77 hotels on the island, and 118 complexes, offering a total of 64,787 beds.
Lanzarote Tourism Awards
Awards for services to tourism were given out this week in Arrecife.
The Dutch tour operator Sunweb Group received the Lanzarote Island Award, while the Grand Teguise Playa Hotel, the Acatife Cultural Association and Antonio Cruz Díaz, posthumously, were recognized with the Distinguished Tourism Award in the categories Tourist Companies, Events/Demonstrations of Cultural Interest and Personalities, respectively.
In addition, special mentions were given to the companies Turismark Management, Bodegas La Florida, Festival Mar en Calma and Hotel Boutique Palacio Ico.
Arrecife Tourism Awards
Three awards were given out in Arrecife for services to tourism in the capital, at an event presided over by Mayor Yonathan de León Machín. The awards were given to Cafeteria San Francisco, for 45 years of service (Ed: The best churros on the island!) as well as to photographer Juan Méndez and the international referee Alejandro Hernández Hernández.
Arrecife En Vivo Off To A Flying Start
The annual rounds out outdoor rock concerts got underway in Arrecife last Friday, and will continue for the next three Fridays. Thousands attended the first night, which started with music at El Isolate de la Fermina, before moving to El Charco de San Ginés and finishing at Marina Lanzarote.
