Pino Tides Arrive
The so called Pino tides, mareas del pino, which affect the island every September, have arrived. They are unusually high tides, that can flood areas that are usually dry, and they can be accompanied by a stronger than normal swell. It’s the time of year when the beach at Los Pocillos in Puerto del Carmen has a separate “lake” that gets flooded and is well worth visiting.
12,000 Enjoy Saiko Concert
Chart topping Spanish singer Saiko’s concert in Costa Teguise was attended by around 12,000 people on Wednesday evening. The event was part of the Lanzarote Summer Urban Fest, and opening acts and DJ’s from the island played music before the main concert.
Potato Shortage On Islands
The island is suffering a shortage of potatoes currently. Most potatoes sold in The Canaries were previously imported from the UK, but the appearance of Colorado beetles in UK potatoes has lead to a ban on their import. Supermarkets are looking at other options for import, and local producers are being asked if they can increase their planned crops this winter.
National Park Investment
A budget of almost €1 million has been agreed by The Cabildo to carry out restoration works in the national park, including the eradication of foot prints on volcanic cones and other damage caused to the area. At the same time, a committee is looking at ways to reduce queues to enter Montañas del Fuego at peak times, and at improving the general experience at the attraction.
Islanders Enjoy Blue Super Moon
Many islanders enjoyed views of the Blue Super Moon in the early hours of Thursday morning this week. The Blue super moon occurs when there are two full moons in a month, the first is called the Starling moon, and the second the blue moon. A blue moon isn’t uncommon, but when it’s the second one in a month, it’s known as a super moon, as it’s very close to the earth’s orbit, and so appears much larger and brighter. it won’t be repeated until 2037.
UK Traffic Control Issue Causes Problems At Lanzarote Airport
The breakdown of the UK air traffic control system resulted in 27 flights from Lanzarote being cancelled or delayed on Tuesday. The airport was crowded with people unable to get information from their respective airlines. Many visitors have had to check into hotels while they await available flights to return home.
Lanzarote Number 2 In Search
The holiday letting platform Holidu has published information about searches for accommodation on islands in Europe on their platform, and Lanzarote has come in second, behind Tenerife and ahead of Mallorca in third place.
Thieves Fail To Rob ATM
Thieves stole a car in the early hours of Friday morning last week and used it to ram a bank ATM in the Los Colorades area of Playa Blanca. The car was extensively damaged, but the ATM survived and no money was taken.
4 Year Old Boy Rescued With Drowning Symptoms
A 4 year old German boy was taken to hospital in Arrecife over the weekend. He got into difficulty in the swimming pool of a hotel complex.
Over 90% Occupancy In Teguise
Teguise was the second most occupied municipality in Spain, after Palma de Mallorca, in July, when it registered 90.3% occupancy for the month. Yaiza, where Playa Blanca is located was had 78.3% occupancy and Tias, where Puerto del Carmen is located, had 77.8%. The island as whole achieved 82% occupancy, the most of any Canary Island in the month.
Car Accident In la Graciosa
In a bizarre story, two cars collided on the island of La Graciosa at the weekend in a head on collision on a junction of one of the sand roads there. We’ve never heard of an accident on the 8th island before and local newspapers are suggested it may be the first ever recorded.
10% Flight Discount For European Youth Card Holders
Iberia, Iberia Express and Air Nostrum are offering a 10% discount on all flights to holders of the European Youth Card issued by the government of The Canary Islands.
