Population Over 161,000
The population of Lanzarote has risen by more than 4,000 in the last year, to reach 161, 378. More than 3,000 of the increase are foreigners who have moved to the island, with just 871 Spanish citizens adding to the total. The foreign population of the island now stands at 51,983 or 32%.
New Web Page For Water Cuts And Shortages
Canal Gestion has created a web page where residents can check to see if there are water cuts or pressure issues in each area of the island, as the company struggles in the coming weeks to get two new desalination plants online. Ironman Lanzarote Confirmed For 2024
Ironman Lanzarote has been confirmed for 18th May 2024, with registrations opening next week. The half distance Ironman Lanzarote 70.3, which was focused on Playa Blanca will not be appearing on the race calendar next year.
Development In Missing British Man Case
British citizen Gary James Watson has been missing since 17th March, when he was on holiday on the island. Guardia Civil officers have released CCTV footage, which showed him on Avenida de las Playas in Puerto del Carmen in company with a man described as between 60 and 70 years old, wearing a sports jacket, seen in the image above. They would like to identify him, and are asking anyone who recognises him to contact them by calling 928.32.04.00 extensions, 1617063, 1617061 or by email: gc-cmd-palmasgrancanaria-pjpersonas@guardiacivil.org
Ocean Temperature Over 24 Degrees
The surface temperature of the ocean around the islands is currently 24.3 degrees, about 1.5 degrees higher than normal for this time of year.
Spoon In Concrete Is Back!
The famous spoon in concrete, a spoon that had been embedded into the promenade in Playa Blanca, was removed by someone a few weeks ago, spoiling the fun of thousands, who had spent time looking for it and posting photos. Builders Phil and Mark from Lanzapro made it their mission to place a new spoon in the concrete last week. Happy hunting!
Prime Minister Visits Haria Market
Prime Minister of Spain, Pedro Sanchez, who is on holiday with his family on the island, visited Haria Market at the weekend with his wife, Evelia. The PM, who faces the task of agreeing a new coalition to remain in power, looked relaxed, and chatted with other visitors.
Heatwave Comes To An End
The heatwave, which saw temperatures in the 40’s in various parts of the island over the weekend, dissipated on Monday, with more normal temperatures in the low to mid 30’s expected for the rest of the week.
Portable Desalination Plants Being Sent To Lanzarote
Two portable desalination plants, originally used to make water for crops during the eruption in La Palma are being sent to Lanzarote to help mitigate the water shortages caused by renovation work to the existing plant. The two units should be able to create 5,000 M3 of water per day once in situ.
