Blue Flag For Arrecife
Arrecife’s Playa del Reducto has been awarded a coveted Blue Flag for it’s high standards of facilities and life saving services. At the same time as accepting the award, the installation of a new air quality monitoring station close to the beach was announced.
19 Immigrants Arrive In Charco del Palo
A boat containing 19 male immigrants from The Sahara landed at Charco del Palo on Tuesday morning. All the men were taken into custody and will be health screened.
Lanzarote Contestant In Masterchef Final
Luna Zacharias, from Lanzarote, has reached the final of Spain’s Masterchef television competition and she will compete against four others for the coveted title in next week’s programme.
35,000 Visit Tourism Centres
The offer of free entry to all residents on the island to the seven official attractions resulted in more than 35,000 entering the centres, to reconnect with the island’s heritage. The free period has now finished.
Red Wine Wins Award
Lanzarote is well known for the quality of the island’s white wines. But this month, an award has been won by a red. The wine is the 2019 Esencia Yaiza, from Bodegas Vega de Yuco, which has won a silver medal at Agorcanarias. The wine is made from the listan negro grape and is matured in oak.
Covid Tracking App Being Trialled In La Gomera
A Covid track and tracing app is being trialled in La Gomera from 20th July. The app, called Radar Covid, will be tested in a simulated infection scenario. Once approved, it will be rolled out across Spain.
Cruise Ship Ban Continues
The ban on cruise ships visiting Spanish ports will continue, despite the lifting of the state of alarm in Spain. A decision will be taken by the General Directorate of the Merchant Navy as to when they will be allowed back.
New Police Cars
The Police Nacional have taken delivery of a fleet of 5 new “Smart” police cars. The cars are Toyota Prius Hybrids, and are equipped with cameras, number plate recognition systems and on-board fingerprint testers.
Kikoland Eviction Order Approved
The courts in Arrecife have approved an eviction order on behalf of Yaiza Ayuntamiento, requiring the 10,000 metre plot where Kikoland is located in Playa Blanca, to be vacated. The plot was gifted for 50 years and without payment, in 2004, by former mayor José Francisco Reyes, who was subsequently convicted on several counts of corruption. The Princesa Yaiza Hotel, which operates Kikoland has said they will appeal the decision.
