Chirringuito At Arrieta Has Gone
The famous beach bar at Playa La Garita in Arrieta, which has been serving food and drinks since 1993, has been demolished by the local town hall this week. There was an issue with the licensing, and despite the owner seeking a solution, it was not possible to renew the concession. The current owner has chosen to retire, and the town hall will now look to renovate the area and put the concession out to tender.
Smoke From Canadian Fires Will Reach The Islands
Smoke from the Canadian wildfires will reach the islands this week, propelled by a high level jet stream. There have been no health warnings issued, but some haziness over The Canaries is expected.
British Visitors Top Table So Far This Year
A total of 1,097, 214 tourists have come to Lanzarote this year to date, with British visitors topping the table:

New President Of The Canary Islands Parliament Is From Lanzarote
The new President of The Canary Islands Parliament is Astrid Pérez, who was Mayor of Arrecife until now. Astrid is the first Lanzaroteño to hold this important position, since the islands became an autonomous community.
Oswaldo Betancort Becomes President Of The Cabildo Of Lanzarote
Former mayor of Teguise, Oswaldo Betancort took the helm as the new President of The Cabildo of Lanzarote this week, succeeding Dolores Corujo in the role.
Covid Second Deadliest Disease In 2022
Covid remained a threat to islanders in 2022, despite the relaxation of restrictions. The virus claimed 1339 lives in The Canaries, twice as many as in 2021, and second only to heart disease.
Tourist Centre Visitors Up 28.7% This Year
Visitors to Lanzarote’s official tourist attractions were up by 28.7% in the first five months of this year, compared to 2022. A total of 1.36 million entries were recorded visiting James del Agua, Mirador del Rio, Timanfaya and the other tourist centres. At the current rate, it’s likely that an all time record will be recorded this year.
Starting The Week With A high Temperature Warning
AEMET has issued a high temperature alert for Monday and Tuesday this week for the island, with 36 degrees expected inland, with cooler temperatures on the coast.
Papagayo Named As One Of Spain’s Top Beaches
The beaches at Papagayo have been named among “Spain’s most desirable beaches” by National Geographic Magazine.
Review Of Fish Farm
The Canary Islands government has announced a review of the application to create a fish farm off the coast of Playa Honda and Arrecife. The application was made by the same company that used the run the fish farm off the coast of Playa Quemada.
Summer Hours Extended At Attractions
Two of the island’s busiest attractions have had their hours extended for the summer months to cope with the current high numbers of tourists on the island. From 1st July until 15th September, Timanfaya will be open from 09:00 until 17:30 with the last tour at 16:30, and the restaurant there will be open from 12.00 to 16:00. Cueva de los Verdes will be open from 10:00 until 18:00, with the last tour at 17:00.
