High Temperatures Expected Next Week

The weather service AEMET is warning that a very hot air mass will reach the islands from Africa next week, from Monday onwards. Temperatures of around 35 degrees are expected.

Tourism Department Promoting Lanzarote In North America

Representatives from the tourist department have been in North America this week, visiting Minneapolis, New York and Toronto to promote the island to new markets and to take advantage of direct flight from the US to The Canaries.

Club La Santa Celebrates 40th Anniversary

Club La Santa celebrated 40 years of being a world class sports and leisure destination this week. The centre remains part of the economic engine of the island, bringing around 40,000 visitors each year to enjoy the incredible sports facilities available on site.

Another Dry Winter

Lanzarote had less than 100 ml of rain in the period 1st October to 31st May, and the province also recorded the warmest and driest May since records began.

Noche Blanca In Teguise Confirmed for 28th July

Noche Blanca, or white night, is one of Teguise’s major events. Originally scheduled for 30th June, the town hall suggest last week they may have to push it back much later in the year, perhaps November. However, they have now confirmed it will be on 28th July. We’ll post details as they become available.

New UD Lanzarote Manager Formally Introduced

Leonel “Pipa” Gancedo, the new manager of UD Lanzarote gave his first press conference this week, as he was introduced by the board. Pipa said his work will revolve around the pillars of “humility, effort and being united” and for this, he recalled the phrase that “together, each of us achieve more.” As for his style of play, he stressed that he likes his teams to “have the ball and it is the players who must interact on the pitch.”

Work On Expanding Cruise Dock In Arrecife To Begin Next Month

Work on lengthening the cruise ship dock in the harbour at Arrecife will begin in July. The €12 million contract will extend the dock by 32 Metres to 149 Metres, and also provide better access for Ro-Ro ferries.

Primark To Open This Week

Lanzarote’s first Primark store will open on Thursday 22nd June, and thousands are expected to visit Open Mall in Arrecife to find out about the brand. Primark was started by Arthur Ryan in 1969, when he opened a store in Dublin trading as Penneys, with the aim of providing people with affordable fashion. The company now has 72.000 staff with 400 stores in 15 countries.

Update: We attended the official opening on Thursday – you can see photos and video on our Facebook page. The store was officially opened by the Mayor of Arrecife, the 100 new staff were cheering and waving flags, and a DJ was playing. A big queue built up and as soon as it was officially opened, people were enjoying picking up bargains islanders have always had to travel to other islands for.

The new store has created 106 jobs on the island. The brand has 58 stores in Spain and they are planning an investment on €100 million in Spain over the next two years, opening 8 new stores and renovating the remainder.

Fuji Wok Opens In Arrecife

A huge new buffet Asian restaurant has opened in Arrecife, in Argana Alta. Fusion Wok is looking to offer super affordable quality food.

Growth In Visitors From Mainland Spain Continues

The number of visitors coming to Lanzarote from the mainland has increased dramatically over the last few years. So far in 2023, the numbers are up nearly 23% and by an astonishing 32% more than for the same period in 2019, before the pandemic. Just over 40% of them are travelling from Madrid airport, with about 19% from Barcelona, but there are now also flights from Valencia, Alicante, Bilbao, Santiago de Compostela, Seville, Malaga, Asturias, Vigo, Valladolid and Zaragoza.

Over 5,000 Companies On The Island

Lanzarote finished May with 5,036 companies trading here, and increase of 105 over the last 12 months. 1912 are baed in Arrecife, 1070 in Tias and 729 in Teguise. Around a third of the total comprises small businesses with 9 or fewer employees, there are 300 with between 10 and 49 employees and 92 with 50 or more.

Wineries Double In 10 Years

The numbers of wineries on the island has doubled in the last decade from 16 to 32. The growth has come from smaller wineries, in the boutique and specialist sectors.
