Four New Pontoons For Orzola

Four new pontoons, which will allow alongside mooring for 67 boats, are being built in the harbour in Orzola. The €300,000 project is aimed at offering visiting sailing vessels a northern alternative for berthing, and one of the pontoons is specifically designed for commercial traffic.

Amazing Escape After Car Goes Into Harbour

An 80 year old Tias resident had a lucky escape when his car plunged into the harbour in Puerto del Carmen this week. It’s thought he suffered a medical problem which caused the accident. Two local police officers dived in and pulled him from the vehicle in cardiac arrest. They gave him CPR until ambulance crews arrived. He was transferred to hospital where he was critical overnight and is now described as stable. A local dive school immediately dived to check nobody else was trapped, and the car was recovered the following day.

New taxi meters with printers

Lanzarote’s taxis are to get new meters with a facility to print receipts and take cards. The Cabildo has agreed to subsidise the cost of the new meters with a total grant of just over €17,000.

Castillo Santa Barbara Restoration

The castle, which overlooks Teguise, will have a restoration with funding agreed from The Canary islands government. The work, which will cost around €600,000 will involve securing the structure for future generations to enjoy.

Canaries Economy Forecasted To Continue To Outperform Rest Of Spain

The economy of the island grew by 3.5% last year, beating the 2.5% growth achieved by Spain as a whole. According to a forecast from Caixabank, it will continue to do so in 2018, fuelled by continued tourism growth.
