New record for airport

The passenger record for Lanzarote airport was broken in 2017, with 7.3 million passengers travelling, up over 10% on the previous year. It places Lanzarote as Spain’s 9th busiest airport. In The Canaries, Lanzarote is the third busiest, after Gran Canaria and Tenerife South.

Black Mirror filmed in Lanzarote

Parts of the new series of cult British Sci Fi series Black Mirror has been filmed in Lanzarote. Some 80 cast and crew came to the island to film an episode of the new series which will screen on Netflix. Shooting took place in the Timanfaya area.

Club La Santa agent signed on for another 8 years

Manchester based Sport Tours International has signed a new agreement to continue to act as agents for Club La Santa for the UK. Sports Tours have been selling the club in the UK for nearly 30 years, and they contribute over 35,000 room nights per year in the resort, valued at around £60 Million.

Saga cruise patient rescued

A 94 year British man, sailing aboard Saga Pearl was airlifted from the cruise ship after suffering cardiac problems. He is being treated at Arrecife general hospital.

New Five Star hotel for Costa Teguise applies to create beach

The Gloria Palace hotel group are planning to build a 5 star hotel in the area between Sands Beach Resort and Los Ancones in Costa Teguise. As part of the planning process, they have applied to create a man made beach in front of the hotel, on an area that is currently rocky.

UK Uni looking to establish campus in Lanzarote

Chichester University recently sent 32 undergrads to the island to teach English and improve their own teaching skills. The university is in the early stages of planning a regular 10 week campus on the island to do the same and also to gain practical environmental information from the island’s status as a biosphere reserve.

Sun beds in Costa Teguise update

The tender process to run the sun bed franchise on Costa Teguise’s beaches has finally been announced. Tenders must be submitted by 8th February. The annual fee will be €162,000 for a two year contract, and includes the installation of 720 sun beds and 370 umbrellas. It is hoped that the beds will be back on the beaches in April.

Spanish citizenship denied

Four Moroccan men have had their application for Spanish citizenship denied because of their inability to speak Spanish. The four men, despite being resident on the island for over 10 years, were unable to answer basic questions about Spain or communicate with the court in Spanish.

British man dies on beach

A British man died this week after he went into cardiac arrest while swimming at Playa Flamingo in Playa Blanca. The 80 year old was pulled from the water, but despite being given CPR, could not be revived.
