Work Started On New 5 Star Hotel In Matagorda
Work has started on digging the foundations for the new 5 star hotel, which will be called “Lava Beach.” The planned completion date is November 2018, although that is flexible depending on how the initial groundwork goes.
British Tourist Loses Eye In Hotel Fight
A fight between two British women in their 40’s at a hotel complex in Costa Teguise ended when one ladies eyeball popped out from her head. She was airlifted to Gran Canaria, but the surgical team there were unable to save her eye. The other woman was arrested by Guardia Civil officers.
Strike At Tourist Centres Continues
A strike by workers for CACT has affected the 7 official tourist centres on the island, with both Timanfaya and Jameos del Agua closed on Tuesday and Wednesday this week. Other centres have been open, but with nobody taking money, entrance has been free of charge. There are several points of contention, but the largest sticking point is over an allowance for washing uniforms. The latest (17th August) is that the Cabildo team have put a new proposal to the union and are awaiting a response.
Update: The Labor Court in Las Palmas will be convening “soon” to review what the strikers are asking for, and the proposal submitted by the employers to mediate in the dispute.
Spar Founder Dies
Juan Gonzáles Viera, one of the owners of the Spar supermarket chain in Lanzarote, died on Tuesday after a long illness. He was 62 years old.
Immigrants Arrive In Famara
A patera made landfall in Famara in the early hours Tuesday morning. It was intercepted by police, who detained 11 males from Sub Saharan Africa. All were in good health, which us unusual as the crossing of around 100KM is normally a difficult one.
Possible Airport Strikes
Workers at Spain’s airport authority AENA have threatened a series of one day strikes as a protest against pay and work conditions. When these 24 hour strikes have happened in the past, there has been disruption to baggage handling here in Lanzarote, leading to delays.
There is a meeting on 31st August, where it’s hoped that the strike will be averted. We’ll keep you posted.
