I was looking for some live music a few weeks ago, after the State of Alarm finished but before night life is fully back to normal. Bars and restaurant are slowly re-opening and it was quite hard to find entertainment. I came across a new Irish bar on the Strip, De Barra’s, where Bradley Bromley was playing only on a Friday night at the time -keep reading for an update on that! I went to check him out and I was really impressed, not only for his singing but by how gracefully he dealt with any technical difficulties – he had some the second time I saw him sing- and how professionally dealt with the safety rules and regulations in place at the moment.
So I thought it would be a good idea to find out a bit more about him and share those findings with you:
Where are you from originally, Bradley?
I am from a town called Droylsden in Tameside, Manchester.
And how long have you lived in Lanzarote for?
I’ve lived in Lanzarote since 31st of December 2016 which is when I arrived on the island.
New Year, New Life, right? What brought you here in the first place?
They say it all comes in threes and for me it did: I was made redundant from being a youth development worker, somebody crashed in to my new car and it was a complete write off. I broke up with my girlfriend at the time and I was made homeless due to the break up. I had always wanted to move abroad so I spoke with my best mate Mike Davies who gave me a tremendous amount of support during what felt like a breakdown, so I made the decision to move. I was busking to save up for my passport on market street in Manchester and to get money to get a hotel. When I managed get flights and my documents I came to Lanzarote with 80 euros in my pocket. It was through the negatives I found the positives.
Wow, thanks for your candour. Tell us, what do you like about the island?
There are many things I like about the island such as: the friendly people, how clean the streets are, the way you can feel safe walking around the streets, the beaches, the culture.
What is your favourite place in Lanzarote?
If I’m completely honest my favourite place in Lanzarote is the ocean, when I’m in the sea I feel free and fully complete. There are no specific beaches but the energy you get from this island is like no other energy you have felt before, you just feel whole and your thinking becomes clear as soon as you step away and it helps me to stay focused, deep thinking. I guess you could say that’s my meditation time.
Good stuff. Now back to business, what do you play and sing?
I play a number of different instruments such as: guitar, piano, saxophone at a decent standard. I prefer to sing/ rap overall so I use my instruments for producing my own original music and I love to mix genres and use elements from other cultures. I sing anything from Dean Martin, Elvis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, Ed Sheeran, Shaggy, Craig David and I offer a hip-hop aspect of my show with some Freestyle Rapping and Beatboxing. My set list is for 3 and a half hours’ worth of songs I’ve learned within 1 and a half years.
Quite impressive. Who is your idol and inspiration?
I envy people who have had a battle with difficult times and they have kept fighting and come out the other side, managing to make something from nothing. This kind of mind set is my idol. My inspiration. Well, most writers and lovers of the creative arts know that inspiration comes to you at any point: you could be walking your dog, taking a leak, or having a beer. Most cases of inspiration are when I see good deeds taking place or I see people helping each other. I guess you can say humanity is my inspiration.
How would you describe your gigs and your music for someone who’s never heard you before?
My performances are like no other, I offer a diverse and exciting show. I combine all my skills in singing, rapping, beatboxing and of course you have to be witty. Over the years I have performed in front of thousands and thousands of people. I even managed to rap in front of Kendrick Lamar who is one of America’s most popular rappers.
That must have been something else! Now, tell us, when and where do you have regular gigs in Lanzarote?
I am based at De Barra’s Irish Bar along the Avenida between the Sunset Beach and Gallaghers. I perform 5 nights a week apart from Sundays and Tuesdays. However, I do work with events as a fire / L.E.D. dancer with my partner Sophie Goulthorp who is the director of Wilde Heart Entertainment. Those events are the ones to watch out for as they are outside the box, exciting, classy and unique, which is something special for Lanzarote.
