“Downsizing” will be the first movie of the year in English at Cines Lanzarote. It will be shown only on Thursday at Multicines Atlántida in Arrecife at 19:25h as Monday is New Year’s Day and unfortunately movies in original version tend not to be shown on Bank Holidays.

Funnily enough the title in Spanish has been translated as “Una vida a lo grande”, something in the lines of “A grand life”.

This drama is a social satire in which Paul Safranek (played by Matt Damon) and his wife Audrey (played by Kristen Wiig) are disillusioned with their current lives. But they realize they would have a much better lifestyle if they shrank themselves to four inches tall and well as helping save the planet in the process. Great marketing or what? But the grass is not always greener on the other side…

It also stars Christoph Waltz (from “Djando Unchained”, “Water for Elephants”, “Inglourious Basterds”), Hong Chau (she played Jackie on the TV mini series “Big Little Lies”), Jason Sudeikis (from “We’re the Millers”, “Horrible Bosses”), James Van Der Beek (you will certainly remember him from playing the main character on TV series “Dawson’s Creek”) and Neil Patrick Harris (who played Barney Stinson in the TV series “How I Met Your Mother”), among other.

The script has been co-written by Jim Taylor (“About Schmidt”) and Alexander Payne (who also co-wrote “Election”and “Sideways” and has written TV series “Hung”), it also has directed by the latter.

It has been nominated for several awards, including the Golden Gloves and the Venice Film Festival, mainly due to Hong Chau’s performance – which critics seem to agree on.

Most reviews sing the praises of this film, labelling it as funny, bold and captivating with very well used science fictions elements.

On the other hand, there is still no movie in English in Multicines Deiland in Playa Honda.
