Covid And Flu Jab Programme

The health department is making Covid and Flu jabs available to several groups, starting on 16th October. They will be available for those 60 years and over, everyone in institutional centres, and those considered at risk.

Ryanair To Re-Open Lanzarote Base

The budget airline has announced that they will re-open their Lanzarote base for the winter season. They will have three aircraft on the island and they will run 40 routes from here, including new ones to Belfast, Bremen, Knock, Milan, Nuremberg and Zagreb.

Human Remains Found In Playa Blanca Dig

The remains of a woman and a child have been found at the archaeological dig at San Marcial de Rubicon, the site of the first settlement after the Spanish took the island. The bones have been dated as from between 1408 and 1445 and they have been sent for DNA testing to see if they are Spanish settlers or indigenous islanders.

Update: A further 3 skeletons have been found, brining the total to 5 – 3 adults and 2 children, so it is being assumed it is a very early cemetery. A stone cross has also been found.

60% Of Sweet Potatoes In Hiperdino Stores Grown In Lanzarote

Lanzarote famers are providing 60% of the sweet potatoes to Hiperdino stores across the islands. The supermarket chain has 239 stores, with more than 9,000 staff on the islands and generates about 2.50% of our GDP.

La Graciosa Aiming For 100% Renewable Energy

La Graciosa, the 8th Canary Island, has submitted its candidacy to join an EU programme called “Clean energy for EU Islands.” 30 islands across the EU, if selected for the programme, will receive technical and financial support from the union, with the aim that their energy use will be 100% renewable by the year 2030.

Annual Marlin Cup At Puerto Calero

56 boats took part in the annual Marlin cup event at Puerto Calero over the weekend. The overall winner was Monty, skippered by Rafael García, and the crew have qualified for the 2024 world cup in Costa Rica. All participants enjoyed a fantastic Motown themed party at Restaurant Amura.

Italian Tourism Has Tripled In 10 Years

Almost 100,000 tourists from Italy holidayed in Lanzarote in 2022 – triple the amount in 2002, and confirming it is one of the island’s fastest growing markets. Currently, there are 15 flights a week between Italy and Lanzarote.

Lanzarote Chef Named Best In Canaries

Gonzalo Calzadilla, from the Isla de Lobos restaurant at Hotel Princesa Yaiza in Playa Blanca first prize in the sixth Regional Gastronomy Contest organized by the City of Granadilla. He will go on to represent the islands in the national championship to be held in Logroño, in La Rioja, on November 27 and 28.

Cabildo Supports Small Cruise Ships For Playa Blanca

Cabildo President Oswaldo Betancort has said the new government will support Yaiza’s plan to allow small cruise ships to dock in Playa Blanca at the new terminal: Betancort said “In our tourism promotion strategy we want to promote the arrival of new cruises to the port of Arrecife, including international operators who so far do not make a stopover in the capital, and also incorporate the port of Playa Blanca in the medium-scale and boutique cruise circuit,”

Temperatures Still Well Above Normal

Temperatures remain high for the time of year on the island, with 34 degrees recorded on Monday, dropping only to 26 degrees overnight. The hot weather is expected to continue for the foreseeable future, and high temperature warnings remain in place for the island until 15th October, issued by the health department.

UD Lanzarote Go Top

UD Lanzarote dominated a match against UD Ibarra at the weekend, winning 3-0. The 3 points takes them to the top of third division.
