Arrieta Beach

Arrieta

You could drive past Arrieta in Lanzarote without even realising that you’ve missed somewhere quite special, many people do. Arrieta is a small village on the North coast of Lanzarote, just off the main coast road that runs from Tahiche towards Órzola and the North. The petrol station at Arrieta is well known, not just for offering the cheapest fuel on the island but also for its large supermarket and DIY shop. Casa Juanita, the funny little red and blue house is next to the harbour and sea swimming pool in Arrieta.

Playa La Garita, is my favourite beach in Lanzarote, because it has something for everyone. The beach has a children’s playground and toilet / shower facilities but also and more importantly the Chiringuito tapas bar and Casa de la Playa Restaurante for refreshments. The sea here can be calm and wonderful for snorkelling or it can have a swell and be great for body boarding. There is a pier for diving off or fishing and a few minutes walk away there are some lovely restaurants.

Here’s some video of Arrieta and next door Punta Mujeres:

In Arrieta’s main street there are a a variety of shops including a stationers, decorators, supermarket, bakery and gift shop, they jostle for space among the several restaurants, to name a few of my favourites there is El Amanecer, La Nasa and El Charcón. El Amanecer is the cheapest but without compromise on the quality of food on offer, they have a small balcony with direct sea views. La Nasa is known for its great paella and typical Lanzarote dessert bienmesabe and El Charcon has the best location, situated right on the old harbour with a large terrace and views to Casa Juanita and the sea. If you fancy pizza, there is also a world class take away pizzeria, La Artesana, with thin bases and a great range of toppings such as Bombay and Barbacoa.

Casa Juanita

The villages of Arrieta and Punta Mujeres sit side by side on the coast, the other popular restaurant (especially on a Sunday) El Lago, is located in the middle. The restaurant is run by Angel and offers fabulous fresh fish, paella and traditional Spanish food, the terrace looks straight out to sea, offering a lovely view to accompany your meal. Just around the corner there is a swell, which when the conditions are right, attracts experienced local surfers.

Back to the beach in Arrieta, a bit further along the coast before the cliffs, this section is popular for camping, its not authorised but it is tolerated. At certain times of the year you can also glimpse the brightly coloured para gliders enjoying the thermals off the Mirador de Haría, they quite often land on the far end of the beach. Arrieta is the locals best kept secret, so don’t tell too many people about it!
