We recently had the pleasure of being shown around the site of the new boutique luxury hotel by Sales Director Marga de Luis González. La Isla y El Mar (The Island and the ocean) is due to open in the spring, and is on a site of an old accommodation complex called Balcón del Mar, overlooking the old town harbour of Puerto del Carmen.
The plan is for the new hotel to open in May, and when we visited construction was going well. This certainly isn’t a “lick of paint” type of refurbishment – the whole place has basically been torn apart and rebuilt using the very best quality materials, fabulous volcanic stone facings, immense natural rocks located in the gardens, and huge new panoramic windows on all the suites. The hotel is being created as an “Eco” property, so it has an incredibly complex air conditioning and water heating system that use geothermic energy from a bore hole drilled deep beneath it. The luxury hotel will have a carbon footprint of zero, and even the prevailing wind has been taken into account in designing the various “micro climates” within the hotel grounds.
The patios and communal areas have the most incredible views of the ocean and to Fuerteventura and Los Lobos, and the walkways between the suites feature different textures of local stone, and are designed around all the existing mature plants.

We saw an almost completed suite and the interior decor is magnificent. The living room is spacious, with modern furniture and leads onto a private patio or balcony. There is a large double bedroom, and the bathrooms are gorgeous, with walk in showers and small gardens with natural light. Even the basins have been custom designed for exactly the right look and feel. All feature flat screen TVs, Wifi, docking station for music, air conditioning and a mini bar. There are both one and two bedroom suites.
The hotel will have a full fitness centre and what is a described as a quiet “chill out” area, with two swimming pools and two restaurants.
This has been a major project, with a huge investment. Well known architect José Maria Pérez Sanchéz came up with the original designs and he is overseeing every stage of the work. We were pleased to meet him on the day, and he’s obviously passionate about this project.
La Isla y El Mar has been up and running for a few years now, and is setting great standards as a luxury hotel on the island, having upgraded to five stars. We’ve left this article up as it’s interesting to compare these images to the hotel as it is now.
