A Family Day In Lanzarote

I have been visiting Lanzarote for many years but I still get really excited about visiting the island and my Husband Charlie and our 12 year old Daughter Missy were particularly excited about this family day in Lanzarote in June 2018 as we had so much planned.  Day one was a great family day in Lanzarote.

We landed in Lanzarote and once we had collected our luggage we headed to pick up our hire car. We had booked a Group B car via Lanzarote Information and we were pleased to receive a nearly new VW UP, the Plus Car office in the upstairs car park was easy to locate and the service was excellent and swift. When we are in Lanzarote we are always surprised by the lack of traffic, how well the roads are looked after and how well sign posted the island is. We did not see a single pot hole, if only we could say the same about the roads at home in Dorset! The very few times that we needed directions we used Google Maps and it didn’t let us down.

We made our way to Costa Teguise and Missy and Charlie headed straight to an electric scooter rental shop on Calle Las Olas which is on route to Playa Las Cucharas. Missy was a little unsure so she opted for a trike style scooter and Charlie went for the more traditional 2 wheeled scooter. The only rules they were given was to stay off the main roads and to be cautious of pedestrians. They paid €15 each for one hour and they set off to explore the coast, they thoroughly enjoyed travelling between Melia Salinas and Playa Bastian beach. I was left in this sunshine, enjoying a cold beer and using the WiFi in one of the beach front bars.

Once the hour was up we decided to jump back into our car and head to the Old Town Harbour of Puerto del Carmen for our family day in Lanzarote lunch. After looking at a few of the menus that are situated outside of the restaurants we decided on La Dolce Vita which is situated on Calle Tenerife and has stunning views overlooking the Old Town Harbour. It wasn’t just the views that pulled us into this restaurant, it was also because the staff left us alone to check out their menu at our leisure and this goes a long way in our books!

Thankfully we had made a great choice, Charlie chose a pizza with pepperoni, mushroom, peppers and in true Charlie style he requested extra chillies! It was a fabulous thin crust pizza, with lots of toppings and Charlie tells me that the extra chillis were a good call! Missy and I love Tapas so we chose the potato croquettes, smokey chicken wings, chicken tikka pieces and the Canarian potatoes which were served with the famous Mojo sauces. We both agreed that the croquettes were the best we have ever eaten!

The views from La Dolce Vita are truly beautiful, we were enjoying a stunning day with clear blue skies and the view of the volcanoes in the distance were breathtaking. The service was excellent, the staff were attentive and our meal with a couple of drinks each came to a very reasonable €38.

We were staying in Haria with family and on our way back to the village we stopped off at a VW camper van which has been converted into a Mojito bar called Ron Barcelo! The van is on the beachfront in Arrieta and as Charlie didn’t have to do anymore driving that night we decided to stop off and sample the cocktails. Charlie and I haven’t drunk many Mojitos so we cannot call ourselves experts but these were truly delicious! The Gentleman running the bar that night spoke very little English but we were able to get by and he even made Missy a non alcoholic version which she tells me was lovely. We pulled up 3 chairs and a table and enjoyed listening to the group of teenage Canarians who were playing fairly loud music and singing, they were having a great time and whilst they were loud, they were very friendly.

We had a brilliant first day, we enjoyed Costa Teguise, The Old Town of Puerto Del Carmen, Arrieta, Haria and we still had six days left.
