5 Events You Should Experience In Lanzarote

We know many readers are regular visitors to the island, but if you come at the same time each year, you may not have experienced these events:

Carnival – February to March

Carnival is very special in Lanzarote. Over a period of several weeks in February and March, every town and village has a week of celebration, which culminates in a fantastic carnival procession to the beat of drum bands and replete with some amazing floats.

Each resort – Puerto del Carmen, Playa Blanca and Costa Teguise has their own carnival, and you can travel to the events in other areas on the island, with Arrecife being the biggest. But don’t just watch – join in!

Carnival dates and programmes are generally released from lat September each year, and we’ll post the dates as soon as they are available.

Ironman – May

Ironman

Lanzarote’s largest sporting event attracts around 2,000 competitors and 4,000 volunteers. The start / finish area is on The Strip in Puerto del Carmen and the race lasts from dawn until midnight. The athletes swim 3.8KM, cycle 180KM all around the island and then run a full 42.2KM marathon.

It’s fantastic to watch, and there is a fabulous party atmosphere all day long, with live music, and lots of great entertainment.

Romeria De Los Dolores – September

This an annual pilgrimage to give thanks to the virgin Dolores for stopping the lave flow, when it threatened to engulf the village of Mancha Blanca. Thousands of people walk, in traditional Canarian clothing, from all over the island to give thanks to the virgin. It’s epic to see, and incredible to be a part of.

Once everyone arrives at the little church, where you can clearly see where the lave stopped, an effigy of the virgin is brought out, and a thanksgiving party starts and goes on until the early hours.

Christmas – December

Christmas in Lanzarote is magical! There’s an old style feel to it – not too commercial or cynical. And of course, it’s accompanies by sunshine and beaches!

All the resorts put up amazing lights for the festive season, which usually kicks off with a Santa Parade in Puerto del Carmen. Children can visit Santa in various places around the island.

The biggest event over Christmas is on 6th January, when the three Kings visited the baby Jesus. There are processions all over the island, with the three Kings arriving by camel to bring presents for the children – it’s fabulous to watch!
